That grin doesn't convince anyone.

He's 81 years old and been a priest for most of his life. I doubt the celibacy thing worries him too much.

Of course, you are assuming that the pope actually is, and has been celebate.

I spects he's happy if he has a productive visit to the toilet.

Nah, everyone knows that those celibate priest types spend all their alone time frantically masturbating. Why do you think they print their Bibles on what amounts to tissue paper? It's pretty obvious they don't actually use them for reading.

Agree. There's more leer to that look than smile. :skull:

Just to derail a bit, am I the only one a trifle bemused by a German lecturing Australians about the treatment of aborigines years ago?

Actually, I think it would be rather naive to assume that they do not regularly have sex with a male or female partner. The pecadillos of the popes prior to the mid 1500 are pretty well known, and my feeling is that the church has just gotten rather better at providing discreet outlets rather than anything about the papal behavior changing.

Yes, it seems they weren't exactly chaste. I can't for the life of me find where I read it, but one pope was for example rumored to have ordered the following: "Bring me another catamite, I've worn this one out!" :covereyes

Though I suspect that many rumors of their sinful living was not true, it's pretty clear that many popes through the centuries have not been the embodiments of celibacy.

Perhaps. Just like any other collection of highly driven, with big egos and power. Like, say, presidents and prime ministers, or CEOs, at least the ones depicted in the movies. You'd think, though, that some rumors would leak out, occasionally. But who needs that? If he promotes religion, then there is no limit to the depravity, eh?

I did some research and found the site where I read the "catamite-thing". It's a lists of bad popes :) Can't say if any of this is reliable, but I'll warn for a badly designed website with annoying midi music and all (oh and NSFW descriptions of popes behaving badly :D)

Just a short sidestep (sounds better than derail ;)) to lighten the atmosphere a bit: IsoPopes (http://www.nearingzero.net/nz392.html)

Now back to the plot...
