Are there any planned festivities? I know that the last two years by this time they were already plugging their galas with a program of speeches and movies. Nothing's being advertised at the NY kooks site (http://www.ny911truth.org/) or (as far as I can see) at the NY We Are Change chapter. I know that Willie Nelson was talking about doing some sort of benefit concert, but as to whether it would be in Austin or in New York was not yet settled. 9-11 Blogger doesn't show any events scheduled for that week as yet.

It's an expected number, i.e. total runs scored in a baseball game. If two well hitting clubs are contending, you might expect a high number of runs. I'm not sure it was ever really organized. It was just a bunch of people that got along, because they thought they agreed on things. As time went on and more words dribbled out of each of their mouths, they slowly realized that they actually disagreed with each other quite a bit.

That's what, the third time they've pushed back the donation "deadline"? Will they keep extending it until they finally shake $20k out of the shrinking truthist population sometime around 9/11/09 and use the money to fund "9/11 Now Or Never II"?

I must admit, I'm curious as to how the hip-hop concert thing turns out for them, having gone to a few (wrestling) shows in the Grand Ballroom. Will they get a good turnout? How many of the concertgoers are coming for the artists and will be turned off by all the 9/11 mumbo-jumbo? How are the artists going to get paid if turnout is as weak as the donation drive thus far? You know, stuff like that.

Rather than "diversification," I'd suggest that "more and more about less and less" is the fate of the truther true believer movement. (I am aware that that phrase is usually applied to academic research and argument!) This is apparent in current or recent threads about such matters as what, exactly, FBI spokesman Rex Tomb meant; Gen Myers' dalliance with a senator on the morning of 9/11; or the latest attempt to distort Wally Miller's statements.

More and more about less and less; ever-greater focus on irrelevant, even trivial points; because of their failure to put anything like even a noticeable dent in the actual, fact-based story of 9/11, truthers find themselves trying to find the tiny kinks.

What is this called; god of the gaps fallacy? Or does it say more about normal, routine failure?

And we all know they will never shut up or disappear. More will drift away, either to real life, or to other nuttiness; but some will never leave the field, and from time to time fresh ones will join up. And we all know that they will come here and make the same unfounded claims their predecessors did -- indeed, they will probably crib from the same sheets.

ETA: I don't follow the larger truth movement, so I don't know what is said about whose fault it is that the movement has failed. Hereabouts, the truthers frequently appear to blame individuals for their failures -- darn that Gravy, darn that Mackey, darn that [your favorite debunker posters here]; were it not for him/ her/ them we might succeed.

But in fact, it is the narrative as a whole which has succeeded; evidence-based, scientifically-based, developed by real-world experts and the like. Whatever sort of hatred for the Bush admin is employed to attack the narrative, it cannot be successfully attacked on the technical evidence. It could ever only be successfully attacked politically, as "I hate the Bush admin/ the Jews/ American politics [your favorite bogeyman here] so much that I believe this..." which is what the non-evidence based approach always comes down to. Fortunately for the real world, that cannot be applied to how the physical world works.

And as for the politics, there is no there there (sorry, Gertrude Stein!) It is nothing but negatives, and negatives don't create successful narratives. Examining human behavior rationally, one finds that it is extraordinarily improbable that Bush would have approved something like this (think of Chomsky's statement!); that Silverstein or Mossad was that powerful (and suicidal!); or that the FDNY or NY police or pilots' unions or others could have been bought or threatened off as the truth movement proposes.
