Yo Yo,
What (free) defrag. tools do you guys use for windows XP outside of the free utility that comes with Windows?

Are there any really good ones out there that are also safe for use?

Thanks.

I recently downloaded the one from Auslogics. I like it a lot.

If you use the NTFS file system you have little if anything to gain by defragging ..

Hey nice article, thanks. I've done a few of those things in there that weren't already on my work laptop - not sure if I'll see a gain or not but nothing to lose on this old creaky thing (only 512MB still, yeesh). Actually it doesn't run too bad most days except on initial boot........takes FOREVER (and except for a few things in that article I've done about all I can, I think).

Tune UP Utilities 2008 it costs $49,- but is a good all around product that can make your PC perform better in many (quite technical) ways. You can use a free trial version. Good thing about it is that it really makes you pc work faster on the internet, because it knows all kind of hidden* windows settings that are very inefficient on modern computers with 10 Mbit connections. It then changes those settings based on what kind of internet you have and what kind of PC and the result is noticeable (the faster your connection the better improvement you get, so you can argue it isn't really that helpful because how much 'do we need a speed increase if we are already very fast? )

Anyway since I use it my PC keeps working at full speed a lot longer especially when I use 5-10 applications at the same time

* hidden as in a normal person would never find out of these settings on his own, sure you can manually change your TCPMaxDupAcks setting, but do you know what it means and if a value of 2 or 4 would make your internet going faster? Well I don't. Disclaimer: I have no clue of this example is any good, but the program changed about 50 of these things, and the result was faster data transfer.

FWIW I saw a HUGE gain after turning file indexing off, esp when booting up. Awesome tip.
