March 8-15, 2009
Roundtrip from Los Angeles, CA

FULL details at http://www.amazingmeeting.com

http://www.randi.org/amazingmeeting/cruise4/la-mex.gif

Join us March 2009 for our fourth adventure on the deep blue seas, as James Randi and the JREF take you south to sunny Mexico in search of fellowship, fun and a bit of frivolity. With three ports and three days of lectures, you'll experience a one-of-a-kind environment where your intellect is fed as well as your body.

This journey's vessel, the Mariner of the Seas is an oceanic behemoth of 138,000 tons displacement... with the largest passenger-space ratio of any cruise liner afloat. This is double the size of the first ship we cruised on.

The ports include three of the most popular destinations in Western Mexico. Cabo San Lucas, on the southern tip of Baja California, boasts pristine beaches, golf, fishing, and an infamous bar scene. Puerto Vallarta, with it's 2500-year plus history, was frequently the destination of choice for the Love Boat of the 70's TV series. It's still popular with locals and foreigners alike. And finally, Mazatlan's brave young men will dive off of cliffs near its famous 150-year old lighthouse and crash into the sea hundreds of feet below.

For speakers, we have James Randi who will educate and entertain in his inimitable fashion. He'll be available for casual chats and ocean gazing throughout the cruise. JREF General Manager Jeff Wagg will present information about the Chupacabra Crisis with practical tips on how to defend yourselves against this phenomenon. And finally, an as yet unannounced guest of some reknown will join us to offer a unique perspective on things skeptical and not-so-skeptical.

Join us for a truly unique experience. Berths start at just $1099. FULL details at http://www.amazingmeeting.com (http://www.amazingmeeting.com/).

Garden of Eden: The Revenge

Get me a writer and producer and director and scare up maybe 70 mil from investors and this baby is greenlit, saganite!!! We'll get adjoining cabins and LetsHaveLunch on this kroozola and we'll hammer out the small details. (Like, where in the living hell do we begin?)

DoubtingStephen

YES!

Garden of Eden: The Revenge

We could have The Governator play Adam and Hillary Clinton play Eve. When mean old YahWeh kicks them out and calls them all sorts of dirty names for eating the food he intelligently designed, The Governator looks back at 3 in 1 guy and yells "Ah'll be Baaack!".

Once banned to the real world he runs in to the resurrected corpse of Charlton Heston, with his gun still firmly held in his cold, dead hand (partial resurrection, a budget issue) and together they lead an army of highly evolved simians who take back The Garden from Mr Genocide.

We're not derailing the thread, are we?

I am NOT going to attend this cruise*. But, for the record, I wish to file my objection to its name: "Chasing el Chupacabra".

I feel that not everyone will recognize this as sarcastic, and might assume that everyone on the cruise are a bunch of nutters with nothing better to do, than to hunt some mythical creature.

At least "Escape from the Bermuda Triangle" sounded like we didn't take the Triangle as any sort of threat!

Other than that, it sounds fun, so I hope everyone who is going on this thing will have a wonderful time!

(* primarily because I have been to many of those places, before, and also because it might conflict with some other things coming up.)

Tequila is a must. Another Cupracabra recipe says to substitute a cola for the Jager, to still get that caramel taste. Funny, I never noticed a caramel taste to Jager. I never could get past the backs of my eye sockets.

I substitute grapefruit juice for sweet and sour in a Margarita and call it a Magdelena. A splash of something in this might make a more pleasant yet still formidable cocktail. Chambord? Pomegranate juice?

JohnC

Anyone else notice this:

"the largest passenger-space ratio of any cruise liner "

... so that means it's very crowded! Maybe it they should crow about the largest space-to-passenger ratio.

- Mr. Picky

krelnik

I think the restaurant meet-up prior to the cruise is a good idea. There are also many locations around Los Angeles that are of interest to skeptics, I think it would be fun to get a van and go visit a bunch of them one afternoon.

Among them are:

The very spot where Buzz Aldrin punched Bart Sibrel is on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. I'd love to re-enact it on the spot for photographic fun. (See the exact spot on this map (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://whatstheharm.net/maps/moonlandingdenial.kml)).
Penn & Teller have a cenotaph in Forest Lawn cemetery that can be used as the punch line of a card trick, it was described on pages 3 through 10 of their book "How To Play In Traffic (http://books.google.com/books?ei=SvG_SJy6C4SgiwHxrO3tDQ&id=jM9xKWWXaV8C&dq=%22how+to+play+in+traffic%22&q=cenotaph&pgis=1)"
Scientology has a major presence in LA including their Celebrity Center and their anti-psychiatry museum Psychiatry: An Industry of Death (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychiatry:_An_Industry_of_Death). We could play "count the logical fallacies".
One of the most famous UFO photographs was taken here during the Battle of Los Angeles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_los_angeles) in 1942.
There are probably others that people could suggest, enough for a couple hours of skeptic fun.

You should schedule a contest for those who have been "sipping various alcoholic beverages" to try and say "el chupacabra." If that's too easy, they need to say it 3 times fast. And if that's too easy, they need to extemporize a version of "El Cucaracha" about el chupacabra...

I know there was some discussion about doing something before the cruise leaves. Is it possible we could get a group together to see Lancaster? I'm sure he will be home by March, and depending on his progress at that time we could take them to dinner or visit or something?

Did you all see the shirts supporting him?

I tend to be very friendly and easily distracted (magicians love me) and when I am trying to get that certain shot I might just wander off. Well, assuming Hal is coming, he can just tell jokes through a loudspeaker. After a couple minutes of that, the pirates would be begging the Coast Guard to sink their ship.

Okay Gang! Its January 1st the day is getting close....

Jesus has a roommate, someone from Atlanta. Apparently there is still room for others if they would like to go on the cruise. Jesus is a long time friend of mine who teaches ESL (that is until he got laid off this semester from our community college) he is really looking forward to this cruise as he has never done anything like this before. He is a little worried about what to expect of you all, doesn't know much about the skeptical community and computer forums. He is mostly non-religious and skeptical about most paranormal, he is still a bit wonky about some of the health woo, as that is far from his field of experience. He is hoping to learn lots from you all, he does not want to speak Spanish because his goal is improve his English vocabulary. So PLEASE be friendly to him.

Don't expect the same level of skeptical/science knowledge you would from myself or Stirling. If you catch Stirling or myself messing up with lousy logic, please call us on it, that is one of my reasons for wanting to hang out with you all, I need the intellectual stimulation. I get all the other kind of stimulation here at home.

Now its about time for me to make my flight plans. Has anyone decided what we should do before hand? Or should we just fly down on the day and transfer to the ship? Stirling suggested we go to Medieval Times to kinda get our vibes going. I remember not being about to speak for days afterward when I went years ago so not sure it that is a plus or minus.

Anything interesting to see or do in the area? Yes, I know it is LA but still it is so spread out.

Ideas?

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the Jref and recently decided on a bit of an impulse to join you guys on this cruise to Mexico.

I've talked briefly with Joe Wagg on the phone and he seemed really nice and suggested I make contact with you guys before the trip.

So here I am.

I'm relatively new to the skeptical movement. I've been into philosophy for quite some time and arrived at atheism from there. I had always thought of skepticism as something quirky, involving people debunking ideas that I thought of as fairly benign when compared with religion.

Recently though a friend at work put me on to the SGU and it's really opened my eyes a bit. I think it has helped me to get a clearer understanding of my own position. I’d now say I’m a skeptic first and an atheist second.

I’m still trying to work out where to invest my efforts though and perhaps chatting with you guys here and in person in march will be useful in that regard.

From reading earlier posts here there seems to be some murmurs about meeting up before the cruise. I’m planning on staying near LAX the night before the cruise so I might be able to come along to something the night before depending on how easy I find transport.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome, James.

I went on the first cruise, to the Bermuda Triangle, and didn't know a soul. I now consider some of the people that I met there, and on this forum, among my best friends*. It will help you to know people beforehand if you post here, and go over to the Forum Community (http://forums.randi.org/forumdisplay.php?f=26) thread and just jump in. There's a minimum of posts before you get an avatar.

Of course, after seeing some of those people, you might be asking for a refund. :D

I'm sure we can all carpool to the party. Also, be sure to let people know you are new and such. We're not too scarey... well yes we are, but we rarely bite newcomers (anymore).

Where are you coming in from? Pretty rocking and if you are nice to me I"ll tell you the real truth about Rebecca Watson (ok ok, I'll tell you anyway, she's a nun with a drinking problem. It's sad. Breaks into the communion wine and does that podcast. Wakes up the next day and is off to vespers.)

Thanks for the welcome guys,

I'm actually coming from Australia of all places so i'll be a long way from home.

My flight into LAX gets in at 2:30pm on the 7th of march. It will be a domestic flight so hopefully it will mean i can get out of the airport relatively quickly.

I'm not sure where I'm staying yet, I'm hoping to find a place within walking distance of the airport so I can grab the Royal Caribbean transfer in the morning.

Anyway, if someone would be able to give me a lift to whatever functions on that would be awesome.

Hehe, I always suspected there was something more to Rebecca. You know I would have thought drinking large amounts of alcohol would have a negative effect on critical thinking but there you go.

"And, James, it's Jeff not Joe."

Hmm, perhaps there a two people with the surname Wagg? The guy I'm talking to signs all his emails Joe. Are you guys getting the same emails i'm getting regarding cruise updates?

The non-abbreviated name of the guy I'm talking to is Joseph. Could that be Jeff's brother?

Yeah, generally I find critical thinkers to be the most pleasant and open minded people around. Nothing wrong with being a bit nerdy ;)

I find it a great irony that the most closed minded people out there tend to be the ones complaining the loudest about closed mindedness.

Welcome James, I look forward to hanging on to every sexy accent word you utter! Now if there is a British man on the cruise then you will be superseded, sorry.

Joe Wagg is the man you talked to, he has a New York accent. He is also the sweetest man and the father of Jeff Wagg who will also be on the cruise.

Your a brave man jumping right into this. Don't worry we are a very friendly bunch, many of us were on the Alaskan cruise in 2007 together and seen each other at the TAM's, so we tend to already know each other. But trust me, we are excited to have you with us, and all the others that are attending that haven't chimed in yet. Any Brits? Or Scots BTW?

I'm Susan, and I will have my 18 year old son, Stirling with me. Also taking a friend, Jesus who will be even more lost than you are hanging out with us skeptics. Poor man.

Do you have a specific area of pseudoscience that really pisses you off. You know the one that makes your blood pressure rise. Mine is psychics and prayer/healing, I just turn red faced when I hear someone going on about how they prayed over some illness and God made them better. Anyway, if you can figure out what is the area that gets your juices going then there is probably a area here on the forum that you should wander over to and jump in. Ignore the fact that people seem to know each other, realize that they are probably tired of talking to each other already and would love some new blood.

And/Or you can just keep talking here on this thread. I get all excited when I see a new post here.

Noel, Stirling and I might just take you up on the couch idea. We are waiting for you all to decide if we are getting together and doing anything or not, besides your house. How close are you to the airport and cruise line? Everything down there is so far apart from each other.

Hey Susan,

Thanks for the welcome

Out of the pseudoscience stuff I think I'm with you about psychics. I think psychics have always come across to me as legalised con artists. I find TV psychics the most irritating. I think in general it just annoys me when people exploit our default position of trust as it moves us as a society towards a default position of distrust which isn't healthy.

My major concern at the moment though is understanding the human need for community and how religions and pseudo scientific organisations prey on that.

Anyway, I might start up a post in the philosophy forum and discuss some of my ideas there.

Also, thanks Geek Godess for the minties tip, i'll keep that in mind ;)

Of course you don't. Anyone who does wasn't there.

My friend went to do this in Cancun this year and said it was the best part of the visit. But they try to sell you a very expensive video of you with the dolphins. I guess we are going to encounter that everywhere.

I didn't really think about doing anything, but hanging around. I like taking the tour cars that take you around the city, all the tourist attractions and some neat places to take pictures. I'm really not a water person (we only live minutes from the ocean and never go).

I thought the newbie stuff was still on, I've been sharpening my spear for weeks, and the frogs are almost big enough now.

My understanding is that it's just supposed to be the main dining hall, so if a bunch of us want to go and just hit the buffet in a t-shirt and jeans, that's not a problem.

Alaska was with Celebrity, and like the first cruise, this one is going to be Royal Caribbean. If I had to bet, I'd say it's probably going to be more like TAA1 than TAA2 in the formality department. Which suits me just fine.

I have seen this fabled land of the chupacaras and it is beautiful. The land that is, not the chupacaras.

I didn't really want to be an advance scout but mother in-law thought we should take a family cruise to Mexico in January. :) & :(

We were on a different ship than the one you will be sailing on so I won't show you any photos of that. What I do have is some photos from two of the excursions which might help you decide what you will do in port. I've put the photos on two separate Wiki pages.

Here are the two excursions we went on.

#1. Puerto Vallarta excursion, Hideaway at Las Caletas (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Hideaway_at_Las_Caletas), included snorkeling, kayaking, a good lunch with an awesome view, some whale watching, sea lion "encountering", a nature trail with orchids (in season), photo ops with a monkey & Macaw,

2. Cabo San Lucas, Premier Cabo Yacht experience (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Cabo_San_Lucas_sail), a real yacht, whale watching, snorkeling, very good food & open bar, kayaks available, sport fishing light on the return trip. This yacht takes a very small number of passengers and is pricey but I would do it again, sign up early to be sure of a seat.

We took the day off from touring in Mazatlan. Just hung out near the ship, bought a Tee shirt & some Cohibas, mmmm.

Please allow me a momentary drift from topic.

Those of you wishing to get RSL t-shirts or caps (see my sig) before embarking on the cruise, please order before 14th February. That will allow until 21st Feb for them to be delivered to me, leaving two weeks for me to get them out to you (bearing in mind most of you are not ordering from the UK and postage can take 7 - 10 days).

Please note on your order form that you need your items for the cruise.

Yes. I've cruised with Royal Caribbean before, and the formal thing did not extend to the entire ship. You could easily skip the main dining room and choose instead to eat at one of the several other restaurants.

This is a BIG ship, so its quite easy to avoid something if needed. I was on Jewel of the Seas on my last cruise in 2005, and it was 13 stories high and that's just the public areas of the ship. It had a passenger capacity of 2,500. This ship is even larger, it holds 3,100 passengers.

I'm not sure anything is planned yet, but a bunch of us from Atlanta are flying into LA around midday on Friday, March 6th and we will be in town all day Saturday presumably doing touristy/skeptic things like having our picture taken in front of the Scientology sign on Sunset.

Do you have a suggestion for a venue or time? Also, we're also looking for interesting tourist things to do particularly if they relate to science or skepticism.

Well, for people new to Los Angeles (and people who live here but haven't a clue) I often recommend a visit to The Museum of Jurassic Technology (http://www.mjt.org/themainpage/main2.html). It's a place where art meets science, or art dresses up like science. It's not really woo. It's more of a realized concept.

But really, I was thinking about a meet up at some restaurant for dinner and talk. That shouldn't be too hard to arrange for.

I wonder what the CFI has going for that night? Hmmm...

There has been talk of maybe doing a party saturday night at hcmom's place. It is well suited, but is also about 40 miles away from the port, so folks without a car have a challenge. She's under the weather and might not post much for a coupla days, but we spoke this weekend and she said that she wanted to ask how many folks would be interested, given the distance.

So... if you're interested, um... say so :)

Kittynh and i are each arriving about 1 p.m. on Saturday. Currently we are sharing a hotel near the port, but I'd dearly like to do something that afternoon and/or evening, and we can relocate our hotel.

I wasn't planning to rent a car, but will do so if people want to share.

Nancy and I will be driving in and wouldn't mind joining in. We'll have a couple of seats available in the T-Bird.

Ah-HA! I found this today (for Puerta Vallarta):

Mexican Chocolate, Coffee and Vanilla Festival [Other]
The Mexican Chocolate, Coffee and Vanilla Festival will run from March
10 - 15, 2009 at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens. This event will
showcase their collection of chocolate and coffee trees, as well as
the numerous vanilla orchids that were planted during 2008. Enjoy
educational and inspiring demonstrations and a special menu dedicated
to chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Well-known speakers will share their
wisdom at 2:00 PM daily during the festival. On Saturday March 14,the
celebrations culminate with a party called Food and Nectar of the
Gods " 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm. the food of the Gods being chocolate and
the nectar of the Gods being quality wine! This decadent event is
co-hosted by Charlotte Semple and Carol Fast of Xocodiva Artisan
Chocolates and Nina Goodhope of Bodega de Nina Fine Wines. Included in
the price of admission is a gourmet Mexican buffet. Free
transportation for this event is provided to and from Lázaro Cárdenas
Park on the south side. The price is yet to be announced. For further
information call the Botanical Gardens at 223-6182.

Just out of idle curiosity, is there anyone who has a cabin but still needs/wants a roommate?

Check with Jeff. It would be hella awesome if you could come.

There's a cabin open. I would need a roommate to afford it. Any other last minute cruise goers? All I ask is a non-smoker (and non-stabber).

Hell Loon, if I had known about it in time, I would have dropped my roomie in a New York minute.....:p:D;)

Hope someone comes along and makes it possible. Check with Joe Wagg, maybe he has someone that has talked to him.

Hey Loon, what sort of cabin is it (ie, what sort of price tag per person)?

That would be great if you could go. Joe Wagg found Jesus a roommate just a couple months ago.

Hopefully they can do the same for you.

Really? I didn't think those existed. I thought they just put singles in a regular cabin and put the beds together.

Some of the rooms can take on a third bed - maybe someone would like another roomie in exchange for reducing their per-person cost very slightly

bump... There's a cabin available now: 1159/person. I'd be one of those people. I don't bite, smoke or stab.

It's time to get excited!

I'm going to mail out a schedule of events soon. We're going to have a blast! And there's at least one new speaker coming, so you're getting a bonus lecture or two.

And we have a guest musician joining us. He may not know that yet...

Current temperature in Puerto Vallarta: 82F.

I would also point out that it is possible to have three in a cabin. You could get a fun extra new roommate and get a reduced rate on the cruise.

Stirling and I both woke up this morning and said (to our own respective selves) "this time next week I will be standing LAX waiting for the shuttle to Long Beach"

Its hard to believe that the time is almost here. I have so much reading to get done before we leave, I have made the decision that I will not be taking any school work with me. (this was a tough decision) and will just have to find a way to make it up later if I can't get it done this week.

Also I am hoping that my ex-boyfriend (of the last 7 years) will be totally moved out of my house when I get back home!

I feel like I could almost start the year on Feb 15th and the days before it were all apart of 2008. Life is beginning again!

So are you all excited!
