View Full Version : RSL in hospital
RSL's better half
5th August 2008, 07:13 AM
Hello, Everyone.
I just wanted you to know that my hubby will be out of commission for a while. Robert suffered a stroke last night (8/4). Some bleeding showed up in the cat scan, and it's in an inoperable place - dead center in the brain. The good news is that it is draining somewhat into the spinal cord. The stroke has left him paralyzed on the left side - the blood is mostly on the right side of the brain.
Right now we are in a "wait and see" phase. He is in CCU at a local hospital, and I'm told he'll likely be there a week. (Before anyone asks, no - he can't have flowers in the CCU.) He may go on from there to a rehabilitation facility where he may learn how to get the strength back on his left side. That, however, is too far down the road to think about now. There will be another cat scan to see if he is still bleeding or if it has stopped.
I will try to keep you posted on his progress, but news from me may be slow in coming. Please think good thoughts or pray if you are of the mind to. God bless you all.
Susan
Edit: Please read on. As of 8/11, there has been some progress. Robert is doing better.
2nd Edit: Address for well wishing:

My best wishes and thoughts go out to you both. Try to keep positive! I hope this is not an inappropriate thing to say but when my dad had his first stroke at 59 he recovered completely. And medical care and knowledge is so much better now.

I also hope he gets well.
And I second the above about the quality of treatment these days. Another good friend of mine had a stroke a few years ago, and has recovered about 90% or more of his abilities. I hope RSL does as well, or better!
Please let him know we're thinking about him. And tell yourself that too!

I have never contributed before to threads such as this (I never know what to say) but in this case I must submit that the world needs Robert Lancaster. I stand in awe of how he goes about his important business with incredible patience and grace. I hope he continues to display both during what I hope will be a a full and remarkably quick recovery.

As someone who had a stroke recently, (September 2005), I know how hard the recovery is. I am still not completely back to my old self. But, from what I have learned from talking with him, I am positive he will get through it all and soon we all will have him back to his old self.

Terrible news, Susan. Please keep us updated on his progress if you can find the time.
My sister is a stroke victim and she never recovered from her paralysis, but she was the victim of a very severe stroke that put her in a coma for over 3 months. I hope Robert's condition is nowhere near as severe.
Stroke recovery can be tricky. Sometimes, just when the patient seems they will not improve, they suddenly plateau at a new level, then stay there for a while, then jump to a higher plateau, so don't get discouraged if he doesn't progress as fast as you'd like. You really must be patient.
Please give Robert my regards and best wishes for a full recovery.

Damn, I just logged in for the first time today and I have to see this.
For the time he is away he will be missed.
Thankfully strokes are a lot more treatable now then even ten years ago. I had a cousin who had a stroke, following head trauma, just a few years ago and they were able to assist in draining it from an inoperable location with some new medication......I'd have to call my mom up to see if she can remember what it was.

Best wishes to both of you, with the hope that he'll soon be back with you, and then back to his marvelous job with SSB.
With apologies to Martin Gore/Depeche Mode, here's a song SB should hear when RSL is mentioned:
Your own personal watchdog
Someone that checks you up
Someone who cares
Your own personal watchdog
Someone that checks you up
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Nail and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
He’ll make you a griever
Make one more guess
He’ll put you to test
Things on your chest
You need to confess
He will deliver
You know he’s a big river
Reach out and touch truth
Reach out and touch truth
Your own personal watchdog…
Feeling unknown
And you're all alone
Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
He’ll make you a griever
He will deliver
You know he’s a big river
Reach out and touch truth
Your own personal watchdog
Reach out and touch truth

This must be a direct result of all those hugs RSL was owed and did not get at TAM. You all know what a positive effect touching and feeling loved can have on one's physical well-being. I hope all you debtors are proud of yourselves now!
While I will leave Susan the task of filling up Robert's hug quota, I will do what I can. I will start hugging folks, and each time send good wishes towards Robert. Good for them, good for me, and hopefully can put a smile on Robert & Susan's faces.
And I'm not gonna stop until I hear he's well on the road to recovery.........and maybe not even then either! So there!!
Patience and endurance, Robert and Susan. We're all pulling for you. :)

What everyone else said. I have nothing but the greatest admiration for Robert and everything that he does -- how he carefully, thoroughly, and regularly keeps his websites updated and takes the time to keep us updated, too. I wish I had his drive and discipline, so I am distressed to hear this news. Please give him (another) hug from me, and hang in there yourself, too!
As kitty says, if there's anything we can do, please don't hesitate to ask. Maybe we can't provide him flowers, but would you like some? A fund drive? A stuffed-animal drive? You say it, it'll happen.

I'm shocked! My stomach just dropped when I was told about Robert. I am so sad.
Susan - take good care of yourself, try to get lots of sleep, make sure you eat. You are Robert's inspiration and he needs you. The next few days are going to be exhausting, really try to rest.
If he never writes another word, he has already done thousands of more work to help bring reason to the world than most everyone I know.
Gosh I am soo sad right now.
One of my main goals for TAM6 was to shake Robert's hand, he was a busy guy and everyone wanted a piece of him. But I managed to have Paulina take a picture of us together (http://picasaweb.google.com/sgerbic/06TAM6/photo#5215291031523603970).

It couldn't have happened to a better person.
And by that, I mean that I know of no better person than Robert. He's an inspiration to other skeptics, and a lighthouse to many who seek rational shores. His ability to combine rationality with sympathy, and to deliver a harsh verdict with a civil tongue, is something I can only aspire to.

I should've known what was going to happen with this thread, but I had no idea! Thank you, thank you, thank you - Everyone! I can't tell you what this all has done for me this morning!!!! Robert is sleeping through all this, but I'm hoping he will get to hear all this soon.
Two questions keep popping up:
1. Where can we send cards?
Please send all correspondence through SSB for now. Robert has a post office box for both websites. I will pick up the mail and take it with me to the hospital and show them to him, taking them home when I leave. There just is no room in his room for anything but hospital stuff.
2. What can we do?
Rest assured, as soon as I know what is needed I will ask for help. I am not too proud to ask for help when I need it. Robert and I have already experienced the kinds of help available from Forumites, so I know I can lean on you all.
Again, thank you so very much for the out-pouring of love for my wonderful man. Right now, as I said, he's sleeping a lot. The second cat scan has been done, but I have not yet spoken to the neurologist (sp?). The nurse said something about Robert's brain "shifting to the left." He was too busy cleaning Robert up (he had thrown up on himself) to explain any more to me. I'm trying to stay positive, though this did not sound like a positive thing.
Hopefully, Robert will wake up soon and start the long road to recovery. I know, I'm impatient. It's hard to believe that this happened a day and a half ago.
BTW: Robert's brother, Jim, has a theory for how this happened. He says that all the adoration from all of you have given Robert caused his head to swell and that caused the stroke! Yeah - same sense of humor runs through the entire family. :)
Gotta go. Will let you know when there is something to report.
Much love,
Susan

I am deeply saddened by this news. I have long been an admirer of Robert's work. Everything he did, he did with his own unique stamp. He helped a good many people by spreading the truth. I am hoping for a speedy recovery from this, the skeptical community is not the same without him. He doesn't seem like the type of person to back down from a challenge. He will be in my thoughts.

I trust RSL is receiving the best science based care available. Hang in there Susan. Robert has been inspirational and I look forward to seeing him back on the skeptical cause soon.

Hang in there, Susan. Get better, Mr. Lancaster! You're both heroes to us.

Thank you Susan so much for the updates. Robert is so very important to us. He embodies the best virtues of a skeptic, critical thinker and human being.
I'm sad today but I have hope in the goodness of doctors and modern medicine.
Very best of wishes.

For newer forumites who don't know much about Robert, here's a good place to start:Adoption, Strangers & Family (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=57681). It's one of my all-time favourite JREF posts.
And here's Robert and Susan on their wedding day (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=86198).
Hurry and and get well, Robert!

If we mailed a wrecking ball, would that help making more room?
2. What can we do?
Rest assured, as soon as I know what is needed I will ask for help. I am not too proud to ask for help when I need it. Robert and I have already experienced the kinds of help available from Forumites, so I know I can lean on you all.
Thank you.
Again, thank you so very much for the out-pouring of love for my wonderful man. Right now, as I said, he's sleeping a lot. The second cat scan has been done, but I have not yet spoken to the neurologist (sp?). The nurse said something about Robert's brain "shifting to the left."
uh ... I tried to look this up but couldn't find anything.
He was too busy cleaning Robert up (he had thrown up on himself) to explain any more to me. I'm trying to stay positive, though this did not sound like a positive thing.
My dad is a doctor, even though not a neurologis (no, I don't know hjow to spell it, either). If it helps, I can ask him when I meet my folks over the weekend?
Hopefully, Robert will wake up soon and start the long road to recovery. I know, I'm impatient. It's hard to believe that this happened a day and a half ago.
BTW: Robert's brother, Jim, has a theory for how this happened. He says that all the adoration from all of you have given Robert caused his head to swell and that caused the stroke! Yeah - same sense of humor runs through the entire family. :)
Gee, we're so sorry. :)
Of course being sorry doesn't mean I'll stop admiring what he does, so maybe I shouldn't be writing that card. I'd just hate to be responsible for a relapse.
Gotta go. Will let you know when there is something to report.
Much love,
Susan
Be strong, and all the best.

Crap, if I wasn't tearing up before, I am now. I never saw that post on the adoption before.
And about that "shifting to the left" comment. I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV, but that doesn't make sense and I would wait for more information before I worried too much. Just my opinion.

If my guess is correct, when he feels better he is going to want to quote and respond to each and every well-wisher on the board, much like he does in his SSB threads.
It won't be necessary.

Thanks for taking time to update, Susan, when you have your hands so full. Please make sure you take care of yourself, not just him, and please do follow through in asking for help. You know the forumites will step up. You two mean the world to an awful lot of people.

Oh wow. This is the first extensive post I've read by Robert outside the Sylvia/Kaz world.
If you'll excuse me, I need to wipe my eyes...
Susan, we love you guys. Never forget that.

I'm going to send a card, but it will take about two weeks to get there, and by then his recovery is being considered a near miracle, and he'll be posting here about how much he loves us, Susan, and how much more he loves life now. I'm absolutely sure of that.

Go for it anyway! I'm sending a card even though I live on the other end of the country and, as you said, it will take a long time by which he will most likely be better anyway.
It's always nice to hear from a friend and always nice to get wishes, however belatedly.

Is there anything better than the look on RSL's face (or the look on his beard, more rather) as he was holding his granddaughter? RSL always seems to effortlessly come across as a great grandfather, a wonderful person and a model skeptic.
All my best for a quick recovery, RSL.
Thanks Susan, for being sweet and keeping us posted when you probably have plenty else to do right now.
Take care.

So, so sorry to hear this! I'm such an admirer of both of yours.
I'm not a neurologist, but I've worked with stroke patients. "Shifting to the left" may mean that there's swelling or bleeding on the right side of the brain that's pushing the tissue to the left. Usually when I've seen it in a chart it's used more as a confirmation of the presence of a bleed than a prognostic indicator, though there are particular patterns of symptoms associated with swelling that may go away as the swelling resolves. Definitely ask the doctors about it!
