I am trying to get a new skeptics meeting off of the ground. Our first meeting is going to be on August 28th. You can see the details @ http://skeptics.meetup.com/182/
I hope you can make it. I guarantee I serve the best banana pudding south of the Mason-Dixon and east of the Mississippi or your money back!

I have a schedule conflict to fix before I can commit to the Aug 28th meet, but count me in for future events. Well, except for the last two weeks in November. I'm a Virgo, and the stars are not auspicious for that period.

Sounds great Beau! The plan as it stands is to have our meeting the last Thursday of the month but that is subject to change unless of course Jupiter is aligned with Mars, then all bets are off.

Bump. If anyone is in the neighborhood on Thursday feel free to stop by. I've got 12 coming for sure. How exciting!

Crap - how did I miss this until now?

I've got a conflict tomorrow night, but I should be able to make future meet-ups now that I know.

We just had our meeting and I would consider it a rousing success! We had 11 in attendance, including Dr. Eric Carlson from Wake Forest University. Eric is the former president of Carolina Skeptics, a member of the JREF, and has tested claimants for the MDC. He helped give our group some direction and I am looking forward to our next meeting already! Another member, Robert Martin, who's website is School of Skepticism http://www.martinricher.net/home.html has offered to host our web presence when we get our ducks in a row. For the time being, our website is http://skeptics.meetup.com/182/

What, no pics?

You know, the meetup.com checklist specifically said for me to remind people to bring cameras and take lots of pictures and it completely slipped my mind. I will do better next time. I will at least provide a sketch artist as some of our members do not appear on film.

*Bump*
Our next meeting will be Monday October 27th at 7 PM. We have grown from 24 to 36 members in the last 30 days but we still have plenty of room left for more critical thinkers.

Hey VisionFromFeeling, Go here and register: http://skeptics.meetup.com/182/

Then you'll get meeting notices automatically... and see pics and calendars, etc...

(ETA - I'm sure they'd love a demonstration! That will probably even get me out of my hole in the ground to attend the next mtg)

Good luck to you guys. I started on in Houston in August, as well. We've got 92 people signed up. That only 20-25% will come to a meeting is common, but it's a start. I got a nice bump in sign-ups after Sam blogged about it on Skepchick, and again when Phil wrote a blog about it on Bad Astronomy. I cross post to Craig List (there's a place from within meet.up to do that). Last week, Rebecca on SGU podcast mentioned using meetup to start groups "like the Houston Skeptics", and a few more people trickled in. I'm also going to hang flyers in Starbucks and other coffee shops about a week before my next meeting.

I've joined the Winston-Salem skeptics group in North Carolina, and can't wait for our next meeting! Yes, I'm a psychic claimant, and I can't wait to enter a room full of skeptics! That's like throwing a piece of meat into a room full of starving pitbulls. Ha ha we'll find out. :D

It'll be fun. I'll give everyone a "psychic reading" and we'll see how accurate I am, and being skeptics their accounts of my accuracy should be even more reliable which I welcome. I will also suggest that everyone bring one or two friends who would volunteer, although perhaps we could set up a simple test first so that we don't run out of volunteers.

Wow, GeekGoddess, you're kicking butt and taking names, huh? Thanks Ottle. Our next meeting will be tomorrow, December 17th. And madurobob-It is time for you to come down from your ivory tower and rub shoulders with us commoners! If you need a ride, a girl, RiverOtter, is driving over from Snow Camp. Just let me know.

Godofpie - I hope you meant December 18th. That's what I was planning on. I didn't miss i, did I?

I've got some child care logistics to work out, but I plan to be there. Might be a little late.
