I deny looking at boobies. I have many pictures. I took them with my eyes closed.

But I do have pics of crab porn..........

Don't think I will set up anything for my pictures until I look at them. Phyz and several other people have very large collections of great photos.

I'm experimenting with some new methods of creating web galleries from my Galapagos photos.

If you have a relatively fast Intarwebs tube, try taking a look at this Flash enabled web gallery/slideshow thingy, please, and let me know what you think.

Included are 308 photos from the first day we arrived in the Galapagos Archipelago.

http://getreadygalapagos.com/Galapagos_Islands-Arrival_Day_Photos/index.html

Eventually all of the Galapagos photos taken by Terry and I will appear in my Flickr account too.

Hi, all! I was hoping to have my photos up by now, but I managed to kill two of my three computers over the last 24 hours. (I fried a power supply on the iMac, and then did something truly stupid to the Linux install on my micro-laptop.)

The upshot of this is that I walked out of the Apple repair shop today with an actual copy of Aperture. *steeples fingers* Excellent.

Current photo count: 1563

We returned with ~5300 photos....

They will be trickling into here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scott_hurst/collections/72157606851845141/

So far, a few shots on the arrival night and the 'city' portion of the Quito tour.

I'm going as fast as I can (while working and doing the other necessary things). On the plus side, take a slide show of the of Quito city. There really are some lovely photos in there.

I'll post again (and again) as I add more to the collection.

That works very nice. If it had a way to let the user show the images at their choice of resolution (with on the fly scaling) it would be perfect.

It does do some primitive resizing automagically if you make your browser window larger, but there certainly is room for improvement.

I've uploaded some photos to Flickr:

So far all I've done is download my images from my cards and load them into Lightroom. It'll probably be a week or two before I spend any real time with them because I have to finish up another photo project that was underway before the trip.

I did, however, grab one teaser shot that I got with my underwater rig:

Here's the one I have (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/79667-REG/Ewa_Marine_EM_U_AXP_U_AXP_Underwater_Housing.html) , but they do make a few different sizes for different camera bodies.

The bag worked moderately well, but I would have benefited from using some different camera settings. Last month I did a lot of testing with the bag, but in a crystal-clear swimming pool, so what I learned about using it did not transfer perfectly to the murky ocean waters. All my u/w pictures are going to require a bit of post work, but it was fun to have.

1) Thanks!
2) If you do use the 'slideshow' bit, there are controls in the lower right (that only appear when moused over) to allow 'inbiggen' and 'hide/show text'. It actually works pretty nice full screen, even at 2560x1600.

3) I've put together a couple of my panoramas so far. I've upped the compression to get them down to a manageable number of bytes (about 2MB each), but they are huge dimensionally. You'll want to download them and view in a real viewer where you have fine pan and zoom control.

Everything we did is broke down by day and event. If you were there, you should be able to find what you are looking for pretty quick.

Of more use to everyone else, the 'Best Of' set. It is all repeats from the other sets, but is giant bucket of WOW. To make that pile, it was just a beautiful photo, or showed some really interesting animal behavior.

On the Steve's Photos site each image is available as a Zip file in it's full, possibly cropped size, a single click on the form embedded at the bottom of the page will start the download. These were saved in very high quality (100%) JPG format.

While I'm not nearly as talented behind a lens as ScottH or Phyz, the subjects were so adorably cute it was fairly easy to get a few good shots.

My Galapagos pictures are now ready for viewing. Over the next few days we'll be adding descriptions to the individual images, but I suspect they're OK as-is for this crowd.

I split them across three posts, and you can begin the viewing here:

My site is a bit of a jumble right now because I'm in the process of abandoning flickr. I need a magic "move everything back to my own site" button, but I can't seem to find such a thing.

Thanks, phyz. I saved myself a HUGE amount of post work by only shooting the underwater stuff in raw. For all the outdoors / bright sunshine stuff I just stuck with high-res jpeg, so each of those just needed some quick cropping and maybe some leveling and USM.

Carol is currently pouring through her copious notes to compile descriptions for each of the pictures. She should be done by TAM 7.

By way of making things more complicated for myself, I did the exact opposite: shot everything in raw except for the underwater stuff in jpeg ;-)

Finally finished with everything (at least this phase). 2,235 total images minus 618 rejects, for 1,617 images in the galleries here:

And for those skeptics among you who doubt that Hamradioguy actually hiked all the way up the Inca trail to the Sun Gate (Intipunku) here's the proof.

And the view from the top. The term "breathtaking" comes to mind.

Awesome HRG. Though I don't doubt you, I must point out. Since your person appears in neither photo, it hardly constitutes proof. HA!

Now to catch up a bit post DC so I have time to look at all the other posted photo links.... especially can't wait to see all the underwater stuff from D.I.!

The good news is that it won't take you too long to go through my u/w stuff, as I only ended up with a small set that were worth posting (and most of them are of turtles!). I made a somewhat critical error with those photos: I used the camera and flash settings that I had honed in on from several weeks of practice in a pool. You can probably already see the problem... the pool was crystal-clear and I had a human model who would stay in one spot and do whatever it was we agreed on beforehand. The open ocean, however, provided none of these niceties but rather hit me with murky water and sea critters that darted all over the place with no concern for my needs.

It's totally my fault for not thinking of this and bumping up the ISO and/or flash output. But hey, I still caught a few cool turtle snaps. And I guess we'll just have to go on another trip sometime soon so I can try again!

Great photos, boo! You've obviously got a great eye for composition.

(but I already knew that, really)

You've obviously got a great eye for composition.

That is a wonderful compliment, I thank you. :o

This whole process is about learning. I'm using GIMP after trying several other programs and because I can't afford anything else. The more I use it the better I'm getting at taking what were ok shots and making the end result a much better picture then I am a photographer.

Compared to you, phyz, DI and others, I'm a hack. But every so often I surprise myself.

My sets are obviously not organized by dates or locations given the jumbled mess I made of the data. Scenic pics are up and I'm adding to 'Things with wings'. Will probably do reptiles next.

Yes, ummmm..... Who was it who shot this photo, with my camera, on the last day of Amazing Adventure 1? (one of my favorites from the whole trip, btw)

My Galapagos pictures are now ready for viewing. Over the next few days we'll be adding descriptions to the individual images, but I suspect they're OK as-is for this crowd.

I split them across three posts, and you can begin the viewing here:
http://www.peterman.net/wp/galapagos-part-1/

Carol wasn't content with just having images, so she spent a lot of time over the last few days fleshing out the descriptions. Have another look, if you're so inclined.

I'd like to find the time to name and describe all of mine. I'll need to find a lot of time.

I know there were more people than that with cameras! It's fun seeing the different perspectives everyone had. What caught there attention and how they framed the subject. I'm learning quite a bit by looking through everyone's pics.

More of mine are up, btw. There are all classified under the one collection.

If you see something you like please feel free or if you see a shot you want to play with let me know as I have all the original files still.

I know; but that's all the links I found in this thread. If anyone knows where the other pics are hiding, let me know.

My experience is that not everyone snapping shots posts them to online albums. When I attend my geeky physics teachers conferences, it seem like everyone's shooting the demo shows. But I rarely see anyone else's results, and do some work to see to it that others see my results.

ETA: Case in point from our latest national meeting in Edmonton (http://www.aapt.org/aboutaapt/SM08DemoShow.cfm).

Phyz, thanks much for the meta photo links. HTML for a slightly snazzier version is attached, if you care to use it. Had to stick on a .txt extension to attach, so you'll have to rename.

Phyz:

I like your photo links page! Awesome to have that info all in one spot.

If you really want to be specific on cameras, I was using a Sony A100 (SLR) and a Sony Cybershot (point n' shoot).

I put my pictures up on http://home.comcast.net/~Skeptic_Scott/Galapagos/ . For space reasons, they're reduced-sized versions (512x384) of the full-sized 2048x3072 originals.

OK, here are 200 or so of my pics:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30443314@N02/

I have not used Flickr before so hopefully I have done it correctly. I left out almost all the Galapagos pics and half of the rest because there is a Flickr limit of MBs per month unless I pay for more space. I tried to include stuff I didn't see other pictures of like the catacombs in Quito.

Also, I quit taking pictures after the 3rd day or so in the Galapagos knowing you all were taking much better shots for me. Thanks ever so much, BTW.

Maybe someone can clue me in to how one gets the sets to show up in the link instead of the sets and the photostream. Or, I'll figure it out later. Typing titles and arranging the order took long enough. Why on Earth do they post the images from last to first instead of the other way around? Makes no sense to me.

I only now just saw this thread. I need to go to bed, so I haven't checked everyone's album yet, but those in the OP are absolutely stunning. LOVE the turtles <3 and baby seals and iguanas and, well, everything.

I am so damn jealous. The thought of going crossed my mind but the cost was quite high and put me off. Now I regret it. When and where is the next Amazing Adventure?

scotth
15th September 2008, 05:41 AM
Morrigan, the next Amazing Adventure is in March 2009, from Southern California, down the Mexican coast. (this will be the first one that we miss)

The next after that will be a London to Boston in Sept 2009, with various stops around Europe and then Iceland. We are signed up for that one.

There is talk of Amazing Adventure X - return to the Galapagos. It would go earliest in 2010, but I am personally hoping for early January 2011. That would be the moderate temperature portion of the rainy season, and iguana breeding season would be in full swing. The islands would get transformed from the rather desert like appearance that we experienced to green and lush.

I can say from experience, that Amazing Adventures are some of the most personally rewarding ways in which one could hope to support the JREF. And you really get to know some of the best people you'd ever hope to meet.

My site is a bit of a jumble right now because I'm in the process of abandoning flickr. I need a magic "move everything back to my own site" button, but I can't seem to find such a thing.

I'm getting my pix captioned and up to Picassa. I've been following Carol's narrative as to which island is which, but you guys are missing the afternoon of the 12th. Where were we? It was when we climbed onto a platform at the edge of a collapsed caldera. NOT the volcano we climbed on Bartolome (Mars).

Help!

Never mind. Looking through ScottH's photos, I have deduced that we were still on Floreana Island, but at Baroness Lookout

I was fairly geeky and antisocial on the boat (laptopping/working on my daily photo haul) because
1. such is my nature
2. I knew it would be a while before I got to spend some quality time with the photos.

I finally got to spend some time with the photos and have further pared, fiddled, and fussed. The result is this wee set:
