Besides for the speculation over who will be picked for the VP spots, there is one other interesting issue floating out there.

Whomever is elected will vacate their senate seat (the VP as well if he or she is also a senator)

For McCain and Obama the Governor of the state picks the interim replacement. In Arizona, the Governor is restricted to a successor from the same party. In Illinois, the Governor is a democrat, so it is unlikely that there will be any swings in the party balance.

However, for the VP choice, Issues could present themselves.

I haven't looked at all the possible scenarios, but I bet that that is a definite consideration for the candidates.

Furthermore, If Obama is elected, the choice of his replacement will fall on Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, This presents a number of interesting possibilities, especially considering Blojo's shaky political standing right now. I predict that if Obama is elected president, there will be some old style, back room politics going on in regards to his successor.

One possibility is that he will make a deal with his arch enemy, Mike Madigan to pick Lisa Madigan, the Illinois Attorney General. This will get daddy Madigan off Blojo's back and take Lisa Madigan out of the picture for running against him in 2010.

There is even some speculation that he might pick himself.

If McCain is elected, Janet Napolitano may have a strong incentive to nominate someone she thinks she can beat. She's term-limited out next year and McCain's seat comes up again in 2010.
