Depending of what you call "Unix". SVR4 (System V Release 4)? ~SNIP~Tanenbaum's book discusses the design of Win2000 in detail. Thanks for the info. I'll definitetly pick up that book.

You're welcome. The book's title is "Modern Operating Systems" (second edition). Over 900 pages on OS design, with around 90 pages for each of two case studies: Unix/Linux and Win2000.

It's not a test. It's just that I don't believe the details of a half-remembered event are likely to tell the full story.
It's more probable that the event I remember was the Welchia worm. The date (Aug 13, 2003) is close to a time I was discussing automated anti-virus strategies that avoid the problem caused by Welchia/Blaster rev D.
There are contemporaneous reports of the windows update servers being down. But the blaster worm is also suspected of launching a denial of service attack against windowupdate.com.
If you want to be skeptical, there should be enough information here to find and verify the event yourself.
