I've tried googling what I'm looking for but no one seems to really put out this information so I'm asking for help from the JREF forumites.

My girlfriend and I currently have 3 hours between us and are looking for a webcam solution to bridge the gap a bit. What I'm looking for is a software/hardware solution that will let us both leave our cams on, that uses a direct connection for speed, and, if possible, let's the watcher control the camera's zoom in/out, pan/tilt, and any other features it might have.

MSN Live works good for speed but I was thinking about maybe mounting a cam on a wall in both locations and just leaving them hooked up. I don't want to run the video through a website. I want to have to sign in to see it. And I want it only accessible by the two of us. The more video quality and speed we can squeeze out of this the better.

Does -anyone- have any suggestions? I'm currently looking at the Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-960-000111-QuickCam-Orbit-AF/dp/B000UY1OMY/ref=acc_glance_ce_ai_-2_1_tit?ie=UTF8&m=A2U3EU78LB64GD but am open to better suggestions.

On a side note, I do have an old XP box set up as network storage that I could convert to managing the webcam software if that influences any answers you all might have for me.

Thanks!

I'm not sure how well this works as I don't do the webcam thing but

http://www.orb.com/orbsecure

Does say it handles webcams (and it does a fantastic job with other media too). It does use a website but is only accessable from a username and password that you pick so it's not like a you-tube thing. I run it to have access to my files, including none media ones, remotely and haven't had any security issues with it. You can even set up multiple accounts with different restrictions.

It's also free.

So it seems to be more of a peer to peer that uses a website to make the match. While not perfect ...

Thanks very much! I'll look in to that. Havn't yet found a solution to this that's satisfied me so if anyone else wants to input some information feel free.
