Poll of Polls?

I'm somewhat ignorant of how statistics work, but I've been suspicious of the "Poll of Polls" that CNN and other groups spit out from time to time during the election. I've been trying to find the methodology behind it, but I haven't been able to yet. My concern is that they are simply averaging the results of all the polls and spitting out a number. Would this not make the mistake of taking an average of several averages? Is a poll really considered an average? Does anyone know how they are weighing the results?

Not sure of the CNN one, but I been watching the RealClearPolitics poll which takes the average of the last 4 polls. During the primaries it lagged behind the official results.

I wasnt impressed.
