Ok, so I went to a seminar today that was given by Guro Dan Inosanto (google search his name if you want to know about this man). It is usually a good time, I get to review and learn new martial arts stuff and history as well as visit with Guro.

This time wasn't that great though. My partners didn't show up, so I was alone but got paired up by a guy that seemed friendly. He was friendly enough, but I should've known to avoid him. This guy was wearing combat boots, fatigue pants and a dressy sweater. He is also an "expert". I really don't understand why he came to the seminar, since he didn't do any of the drills that were given out. It was really frusterating. I really wanted to just kick him in the head. Oh well. I guess some people are willing to pay big bucks just to show off. I just don't get it.

That bites, Ken. Sorry to hear about it. I hope you were able to take something away from it.Originally posted by thaiboxerken
He is also an "expert". In what style? Please don't say Juko-Kai Combat Ki? ;)

He said that he trained in various arts... duh, most people there did. He is simply one of those people that knows 1000 techniques the wrong way. At least I got to visit with Dan, Eric Paulsen was there as well.

My own anecdote:

In my very first martial arts belt grading ever, in silat perisai-diri, I got partnered up with an individual who was not very good. To say the least.

A large part of the grading involved demonstrating our dodges. One partner attacks with a full-force strike, and the other evades as late as they possibly can. The instructors take notes.

This guy doesn't dodge. Every time, he just kind of panics and stands on the spot. Every time, I pull the hit short because I'm not a complete bastard. Which makes it kind of hard to demonstrate my speed and commitment to the instructors, since I'm pulling every damn technique.

Eventually I get frustrated and kick him in the guts.

After that, he dodges when he's supposed to.

One possible moral of this story is that sometimes, just sometimes, people should be kicked.
