View Full Version : South Point Casino - a Report, with Pictures.

I've just come back from a week in Vegas, and had promised a few people to take a look at the South Point Casino, where TAM 7 will be held, and report back. So, here it is. I'll break it down into a few sections dedicated to some of the events we've had in the past, so those interested in a particular topic can find it easily. If I haven't mentioned something here, feel free to ask, and I'll let you know if I learned anything relevant.
Firstly, there's a floor plan of the casino available at:
http://www.southpointcasino.com/pressroom/presskit/floorplan.pdf
This isn't a very good plan, though. They had a much nicer one available, which I will try to scan and post when my luggage finally arrives (don't ask!). The above plan is missing some of the features I'll be discussing, and even the better one I hope to scan in is missing some cool things. But, we work with what we have.
General Impressions
Fist off, this is the best laid out casino I've ever been in. For those of us who love TAM but hate Vegas, I think you'll be very happy with this new location. The whole place is laid out in a very open and straightforward manner, compared to the "Casino as Rat's maze" design philosophy of the Strip locations. The main casino floor is a large rectangle, with a very high ceiling and good sight lines. From just inside the main entrance (number 26 on the above map), you can turn in place and see almost everything important, and getting from there to wherever is very simple. I'd be surprised if anyone ever gets lost in this place. There are a few things set off the main floor, but there are good signs, and no funny business about oddly angled corridors or other such nonsense.
The two entrances I looked at are also very good. Because the casino is set by itself, and not placed right next to another megacasino like on the strip, access from the highway to the parking lots, and from the parking to the building is very straightforward. Outside the main entrance is a large open taxi and valet area, with about 6-8 lanes for traffic, and beyond that, a bus stop for the city buses. Here's a picture of that area:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3037/2856594391_085ba361ca.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3037/2856594391_085ba361ca.jpg)
Behind me as I took this picture was a large open-air parking lot, which would be convenient for people who are going in and out often, like if they're going to get people at the airport, or something.
Just outside the other entrance, which is next to the showroom box office, number 8 on the map, is the main parking garage, which also has elevator access from inside the casino. This entrance is also where a free shuttle to the strip picks up and drops off. This is just outside the doors, so again is very easy to get to.
TAM Bar/Forum Party Possibilities
I didn't get a chance to ask about renting a room for party, but there are two really good options for bars we can take over. What's really nice is, these two bars are only a few seconds walk apart, so we could easily take over them both, if needed.
Most of the bars in the casino are the long, set-next-to-slot-machine types, and are on the main casino floor. There is one main floor bar that has sit-down tables, though, and one similar bar set just off the main floor.
The first bar is associated with the "Silverado Steak House" shown at number 9 on the map, but the bar doesn't actually appear on that map. It is placed near the number 17 on the map, which number is also the closest to the second bar, which is actually up a short flight of stairs. There's also an elevator to this level, for those of us in wheelchairs and the like. Here are two photos of the first bar:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3029/2857438688_2c59ef901d.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3029/2857438688_2c59ef901d.jpg)

Bad photos, I know. If anyone knows how to make them better, please do, and post them here.
The second bar is "Miguel's Tequila Bar", which you can see the sign for above, and in close up here:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3170/2856606759_3eebbb777f.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3170/2856606759_3eebbb777f.jpg)
It's smaller than the Silverado Bar, but is set off and above the main floor, so it's also quieter. I think it was Brodski who said the bar at the Flamingo depressed him by the end of TAM 6, because the slot machines in background were "the saddest sound" he could possibly imagine. Here's a shot of that bar:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3269/2857435572_d9960d1d04.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3269/2857435572_d9960d1d04.jpg)
This bar is also associated with a restaurant, the "Baja Miguels" in the sign above. But, when I say "associated with", they seem to be separate entities that share a theme, I don't think they will expect you to eat in the associated restaurant.
I think both these bars will accommodate more people than the Garden Bar at the Flamingo did, and they're close enough that it would be easy to move back and forth from one group to the other if you were so inclined.
Also, the selection of beers on tap were better than any Strip hotel I've seen, but the selection does vary a bit from one bar to another.
Poker Tournament
Currently they have a poker room with 11 tables, but they are planning an expansion to at least 23. I spoke to the card room floor man, and he said they have run tournaments for private groups before, so we should have no problem organizing one this time.
I quite liked the chairs they had - they were on wheels, which made it easy to push back from the table and stretch when you weren't in a hand.
They also had some interesting promotions. One was a "football square", which was a football pool you got a free entry into if you pulled a designated hand (when I was there, it was any full house). I don't know if they'll have something like that in July, but if they do, it's a fun add-on.
Here's a couple of photos:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3288/2856597761_9f94166fe6.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3288/2856597761_9f94166fe6.jpg)

Shopping
There seemed to be only one main store in the casino, but I asked, and it is open 24 hours a day. It's also fairly big, and had the best selection of beer, wine and spirits I've seen in a Vegas hotel. The selection isn't good enough to run our Scotch party, but for almost any other needs, I think you can find something there that will suit you.
This store is situated just off the main floor, on the opposite side from the main entrance. It's quite close to the elevators to the hotel, though, so if you want something to take back to your room, it's again very easy to get to.
Family/Non-Gambling things to do
There's also a nice bowling/movie/arcade area on the second floor, which seemed to be decent quality when I peeked in. Here's a few photos:
Top of escalators, lobby of bingo, theatre, and bowling

Almost Honest Advertising
And as an amusing end to my review, just a little typo would have made this the most honest sign in Vegas:

Very nice, Horatius, I think I like it already. I am seriously considering organizing the inaugural JREF Bowling Tournament, if we can find time on the schedule.
What about the Equestrian Center?
Thanks for doing the legwork.

I didn't ask about booking large bowling tournaments, but I imagine they must do that. As for the Equestrian Center, this was the closest I got:

which should tell you something, although I'm sure I don't know what! ;)
And we can thank the Canadian Government for sending me this week, while we're at it!
And I think I like it too. This was my third time staying on the Strip, and I think I'm just about sick of it. Too big, too noisy, too hard to find a nice place to sit and hang with people. I spent an afternoon down on Fremont Street this week, and was much happier. Of course, I'm going back in December for my birthday, as I won an entry into a $50 000 poker tournament that actually starts on my birthday, but after that, no more Strip trips for me.
Unless TAM 8 is there, of course.

Horatius, when in December? I am in Las Vegas from Dec. 1-6 for a conference at the Venetian. It would be more than cool if we could meet up then!
Also, since I am only speaking on 2 of the 5 days, I will have some time to do some scouting as well, so if there is anything else people want to know about the Southpoint (private bowling tournaments?), let me know and I will do my best to look into it.

Am I doomed to have bowling follow me forever? Is there nowhere I can turn to get away from it, even my beloved TAM? Oh well, I guess it's just a testament to how much I adore you all that I would participate, and even try to enjoy, a bowling tournament. But I'm warning you in advance that my middle name is "gutterball."

One more thing I forgot for the review.
I took a taxi to get there. From the Riviera, which is near the north end of the Strip to South Point was just under $31, so a taxi to the south end of the strip will be a bit less. However, South Point didn't have the line of waiting taxis that the Strip casinos always have, so it may take more time/planning if you want to take a taxi anywhere. There is a free shuttle to the Strip as mentioned above, but I just missed it when going back to the Riv, and so I don't know how long it takes, or where exactly it goes.

Alas, I'm there the weekend of Dec. 18-22.
If you can make a visit to South Point, I guess the outstanding questions are the bowling tournament, what the equestrian center is like, and where the free shuttle goes.
Also, if you're in the mood for a movie, a review of the theaters/popcorn/whatever would be cool too. I didn't have time for that, which is too bad because there were a couple of movies playing there I wanted to see.
TAM 7 movie night, anyone?

We'll see. I am not much of a movie person in general, and will probably have to spend most evenings with clients/etc., but if they have something decent on as a matinee, I may do this.

It is one of the better Movie Theatres in LV due to being one of the newer ones, built with the casino about 3-4 years ago.
As the major theatre on the south of town it typically has most if not all of the new releases. If I remember correctly it had about 12-18 screens so the newer films have multiple screens with a few remaining for slightly older and art films.
I only went to about two movies there because it was on the wrong end of town (I used to live in LV on the NW) making it an unnecessarily long drive, but it is a high quality theatre.

Yes, sir!
Speaking as one of the (slightly) underage crowd, I'll do my best to attend the forum party but it is largely dependent on where it is; I know Vegas is wild but I'm sure casinos have their priorities straight...18-year-olds in bars is a no-no, I'm afraid.
However, a movie night or bowling shenanigans (even for us "gutterballers") would be a quite agreeable mix of booze and fun!

Well, I like to think I may be just a little better at bowling than some, but that's probably just wishful. I'm about as good at bowling as I am at golf. And at golf, I can just barely break a hundred.
On nine holes.

I don't know if we'd need to. If it stays on it's current schedule the Myan calendar apocalypse crapfest 2012 (a Roland "Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 BC" Emmerich film) will come out on July 10th. If we can get a private screening we can give it the MST3K treatment.
I've got a bit of experience arranging Serenity screenings with the Southeastern Browncoats (http://southeasternbrowncoats.com/). It will probably be too soon to arrange something now, usually if a theater books privately it does so about 4 months out. If we were going to try and get a print of a non-current release it can get a bit expensive. The good thing about going to a current run film is that the theater might give us a large group discount rather than charging us more to rent an older print.
Update: The theater in South Point is a Cinemark Century 16. Cinemark does private screenings (http://www.cinemark.com/businessmeetingsandmore.asp), so if we can get a good size group together it should be no problem.

That would be highly unlikely, especially the drink (given the way liquor laws work in most states), but if we can rent enough lanes, maybe they'll give us drink specials, i.e. $1 off beer or something like that.

I will be heading out in a couple of weeks, and Hutch was kind enough to send me a list of questions to ask the alley manager regarding private bowling tournaments, etc. If anyone else can think of things they would like to know about South Point, please post them here or PM me. I will be printing out my PM's and noting the suggestions in this thread so I will remember to ask everything.
I am staying closer to the North end of the Strip, and will check out the shuttle/city bus system for those who don't want to pay/wait for taxis. I will also check with the property to see if they have an airport shuttle as well.
Note to self: Don't forget the camera this time, idiot!

Thanks for all the details, I feel prepared this time. Hopefully we won't have to walk a mile to get to the meetings and then a mile and a half to the food. The meeting rooms at the Flamingo were nuts. By the time you walked to the meal area you were half way through the break time.
What I want to know is....
What is the buffet like? Prices, food, and can you sit where you like so we can just hang out there for meals when we get their early? Or do they have to seat you and you can't bring more tables together after sitting down?
I saw there was a snack bar, but I really want pizza by the slice kind of places.
Very importaint.... Do they offer Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb. Sorry that is almost the top of my list of priorities!
I'm game for bowling, not great but can play.
I would rather gather for pool. Do they have an area for more serious pool playing, I haven't played in a year but used to play all the time and love it.
Thanks

Very importaint.... Do they offer Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb. Sorry that is almost the top of my list of priorities!
I'm game for bowling, not great but can play.
I would rather gather for pool. Do they have an area for more serious pool playing, I haven't played in a year but used to play all the time and love it.
Thanks
Susan
No idea on what the buffet is like, perhaps Hok could add that to her list. And no idea on the Dr.Pepper vs. Mr. Pibb issue. But, I can confirm that I didn't see anything resembling Pool, or even a pool, while I was there.

I will add a buffet scoping run to the list, and will check on the available beverages.
Since I will be there in December, I doubt that even if there is a pool, I will be volunteering to test it.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a pool table at any hotel/casino in Vegas... it's probably not a very profitable use of floor space. But as for swimming pools, yes, South Point has one (http://www.southpointcasino.com/hotel/pool.php).

I stand corrected. That must be hidden on the opposite side of the building from where I was, or something. I don't remember even seeing any signs for it.

I am in Las Vegas from Dec. 1-6 for a conference at the Venetian. It would be more than cool if we could meet up then!
Just bumping this a bit so Hokulele can find it easier!
Since she's in Vegas, and all, and probably drunk while trying to post, and all...

Thanks Horatius, I was just looking for this thread. The one thing I have found out (the hard way) is that there is no longer a free shuttle between the South Point and the Strip. I did get information on the public bus routes available, and will sacrifice part of my afternoon to try it myself and give everyone a report.

Having just been to Las Vegas and gotten a transit book, I'll tell you how to get to the strip.
First, it's going to be cheapest to do the Deuce all day pass. $5 for 24 hours. It's good on all the public transit.
The 117 runs past South Point, and takes you to the South Strip Transfer Terminal (SSTT - Slow as :rule10, Take a Taxi?), where you catch the Deuce. The Deuce runs up and down the Strip, and it's the somewhat good news. The slowest it ever runs is 17 minutes between 2 and 5 a.m. At peak time (3 pm to 11 pm), there's a Deuce leaving every 7 minutes. Unfortunately it is also SLOW SLOW SLOW in the actual Strip zone. Stops every quarter mile. Jammed packed with all the other cheapos. If you've got a ways to get up the Strip, you'd be better catching the 116 at the SSTT up to the halfway point, where it crosses the Strip around the Sands and the Fashion Show Mall, and THEN wedging yourself into the Deuce (20 to 30 minutes trip)
The bad news is the 117's schedule. You'd catch it NB to get to the SSTT. It runs every 30 minutes from 5:15 am to 7:56 pm (that's the time it gets there). Then it hits there every hour or so until 1:35 am at which point it quits until 5:15 am. It also only services the South Point on southbound loops. To catch it NB, you have to walk to the corner of Las Vegas Blvd. and Silverado. Basically the stop is catty-cornered to the South Point's parking lot. Good news! It's about 15 minutes from there to the SSTT.
What you save with the $5 transportation cost every day, you lose with the sheer aggravation. I did fine on transit when I went because my hotel was down Flamingo, and the 202 runs a lot and puts you right in the middle of things. But the South Point and public transportation really doesn't agree.

Finally back on broadband Internet, so here's the update.
Boloboffin is correct about the bus system, and the $5 deal is the best if you are cheap, as the Deuce goes all the way downtown (if you want to check out Fremont). He is also correct that it is pig slow. I ended up taking a cab back to the south end of the strip (the Mandalay Bay is the closest major casino) and playing tourist all the way back to my hotel (the Venetian, way up the other end of the strip). If you take a cab to the south end of the strip (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, MGM Grand), $20 will get you there. If you are going to the north end, get some friends to split the cab, particularly during the busy periods, as the cabs will most likely take the freeway to avoid the strip traffic. Access and parking at the South Point is very easy (and free), so I will probably be renting a car. There are a number of places on the Strip where you can easily park, and most of them are free as well.
The concierge was very helpful and had all the information anyone could want. Check with their desk if you want more transportation alternatives. They also provided the list of grocery stores and restaurants/bars on the 117's route.
There is nothing immediately adjacent to the South Point. Over by the bus stop boloboffin mentioned, there is a fairly large liquor store. I didn't go in, so I didn't see their selection, but the ads in the window were varied. There is a Walmart within a short driving distance, or you can take the 117 bus previously described which stops there directly. There is also a Whole Foods on the same route (for those philosophically opposed to Walmart).
Sgf8, no Mr. Pibb/Dr Pepper. They are a Pepsi shop only, so you may want to take a trip to Walmart to pick up your own. The buffet looked good, although I didn't eat there, and the prices were very reasonable compared to hotels on the strip. Breakfast was $6.95 and dinner was $13.95. There was an extensive salad bar.
The movie theatre was clean and new, but not very busy as I was there on a Friday afternoon. The bars weren't very full, but they were small. The one Horatio pointed out seemed the best bet for takeovers. There is another smaller bar with chairs in the bowling alley, which was completely empty when I visited (the bar, not the bowling), and may be a good option for people who want drinks without the casino noise and smell. Drinks from the bar may be brought over to the bowling lanes.
For those who cannot live without caffeine, there is a Seattle's Best coffee in the casino. I actually prefer them to Starbuck's, so I will be a happy camper. They have a decent selection of tea as well.
Dining options are somewhat limited at the casino, although the 117 (or people with cars) can take you to a bunch of stuff pretty quickly. Apparently there is a tapas bar close by that sounded interesting. For the shopoholics, the Outlet Center is within 5-10 minutes of the South Point, and is directly on the 117 route. Christmas in July!
ETA: I forgot to ask about the seating at the buffet. Nuts.

Some TAMers with cars of their own may also be accepting small bribes in exchange for rides to and from the strip. Last year my car just sat in the parking garage for three straights days, which seems like an unfortunate waste of resources.

One more thing I forgot to mention, if you are taking the 117 locally (Walmart, restaurants, Whole Foods, Outlet Center), it is $1.25 each way. You do not have to purchase the $5 pass, but you will need exact change.

Well, lack of a shuttle really sucks. Thanks to Hok for the updates!
I'd expect to use the taxis if I was inclined to go to the Strip, personally. A slightly more expensive option than the Duece, might be busing to the Strip, then taking the Monorail. It costs more, but is a lot faster. Depending on where you want to go, it might be the best balance of speed to cost.
I don't expect to rent a vehicle this time, since I probably won't be spending extra time there this year (need my vacation time for a trip to Japan with my martial arts buddies!), so if I go to the strip, it will probably be with one of these options. But hey, I might not even go there, since TAM has enough cool stuff to do as is!

FWIW, we always rent a car when in Vegas. For us, it's by far the quickest and cheapest way to get around... no taxi lines, no traffic on the side streets, no cost for parking anywhere. Then again, we might do more away from the host hotel -- and away from the strip -- than most people, so these advantages might not apply to everyone.

Well, lack of a shuttle really sucks.
Yup, but they still have the airport shuttle at least. If you are flying into McCarren and staying at the South Point, the shuttle is free, but check their website or call ahead for the schedule and pick-up/drop-off location. IIRC, hotel shuttles are located in a lower level parking lot at the airport, not where you pick up the taxis or other shuttles.
I'm with Desktop Icon. I generally rent a car when I am in Las Vegas for more than a couple of days, especially since there is so much cool stuff to do within an easy driving distance, and other than on the Strip itself and parts of downtown, Las Vegas is a fairly easy city to drive in.

Wow. There very definition of "suburban hell". I wouldn't expect anything more than big box retailers, strip malls and chain restaurants, all surrounded by an ocean of asphalt parking lots. What a dreadful experience.
I'll either stay in the hotel, or cab it up to the strip.

I think I mentioned this in a previous Sount Point thread, but hey, it's worth repeating.
Just north of SP -- but probably beyong walking distance in July heat -- is a new Anthony's Coal-Fired Pizza. Those who were part of the pizza excursion at TAM 5.5 will know that this is a good thing. I can pretty much guarantee that we'll be going there the first night we're in town for TAM 7.

Hey, before anyone starts making fun of me, I'm not that picky. I will drink Mr. Pibb, Dr. Bold, Mr. Dr. or in a pinch Root Beer. Just don't understand why some places don't even have that much selection?
