View Full Version : A common thread

I am beginning to see a common thread which runs through the woo woos and fundies and such. They all seem to be bragging about how ignorant, how infantile and how credulous they are. As soon as one says something incredibly immature another steps up with something even more assinine, going them one step better (or worse).
I have even gone so far as to tell one person who was demonstrating such actions...Why don't you stop pretending to be stupid and start pretending to be smart? You will at least have people think that you care what their image of you is.
Just a bit of a rant. It is getting harder and harder for me to include these nuts on a tolerant level.

I'm curious as to what prompted this thread. Was the encounter on a BBS or IRL?

As I said...just a rant. I get so exasperated sometimes dealing with those around me that I have to vent my spleen. This is the only place I can do so, it aint easy being the only atheist around.
I have been checking out all kinds of sites of believers and woo woos and such, along with talking to people I know. It occurred to me that instead of thinking for themselves they prefer to outdo each other in the 'Who can be the most infantile' game.
I have journeyed from not knowing why I am an atheist to knowing why and not understanding why others are believers. In a sincere attempt to find that understanding I have searched for their reasons for their beliefs. I thought this would bring me to a point where I could disagree but tolerate them in my world. It is becoming clear to me that even the people whom I thought were the most sincere seem to be competing with others as to how blind and faulty in their thinking they can be. When I ask questions I am met with hostility as it makes the person uneasy to have to reason their position. They revert to name calling and pouting like children.
Sometimes I feel like lashing out at them but I know it would only make it worse for everyone around, so I vent here.

In college, I remember doing a sociology paper comparing the how religious a person is with how intelligent that person is (what ever intelligence means) and found a inverse correlation. By no means was this an exhaustive study, I found the result interesting....

I'd quibble with the findings if they just studied religiousness. There tend to be a lot of people who are, shall we say "simple" who like the simple easy answers to lifes questions that religion gives them. What I've found is that the more intelligent people who are religious tend to have a more sophisticated belief and a more profound contemplative spirituality than say a raving Young Earth Creationist fundy.
