They had a free aromatherapy class at out library.
We enjoyed the smells, but the claims were not substantiated; the guy claiemd results from his own personal experience.

Is it bunk, as i suspect?

It's bunk if the guy makes claims. If he precedes everything with "in my experience", then I guess it's not a lie, but people will so easily believe something off of one person's anecdote. I think the best way to put this is: there is no evidence for the claims of aromatherapy above and beyond what smelling nice things would do anyway.
