Very interesting article in yesterday's (Sunday's) Washington Post magazine about the U2 surveillance flights that led to the Cuban missile crisis. Some stuff I didn't know about that whole thing. You can probably find the article on line, if you're interested or you can email me and I will send it to you via snail mail. Anyway, Post has always been my favorite paper and when I am away from DC, I always find it on the newsstand, wherever I am.

I mostly liked your post because the thread title made me think this was a new development. What a momentary thrill ride! ;)

We must have been in a temporary 41 year time-warp.
Besides, the American U2 pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was shot down over Soviet Russia, not Cuba.

AS The event the original poster was referring to was Maj. Rudolph Anderson who was shot down and killed over Cuba on October 27th, 1962. The Gary Powers incident was something totally different. The Post article can be found here:

Oh, thanks for the correction. As I can't get to the Post article without registering, I'll take your word for it and read about it later.

Just a bit of historical pedentry here, but the U2 overflight did not lead to the Cuban Missle Crisis. It was the presence of U.S. Jupiter missles in Turkey and the subsequent Soviet missle deployment to Cuba - discovered by U2 overflights that led to the Crisis.
And it sounds like a neat article, wish I could check it out without registering.
