I know he was probably not being serious, but with O'Reilly, who knows? Carpenters in that day were upper middle class, not lower working class as he seems to imply. We also know from later descriptions of the clothes Jesus wore to the parties he was able to host that he was fairly well off later in life. Jesus was not poor and neither were his parents. Secondly, popularity is not any indication of truth. O'Reilly might have wanted to talk about the merit of some of the teachings of Jesus (though I doubt he's familiar with any of that) rather than appeal to popularity, because Islam and Hinduism are also quite popular last I checked.
