And O'Reilly cites himself as proof there is a God:
"Next time you meet an atheist, tell him or her that you know a bold, fresh guy, a barbarian who was raised in a working-class home and retains the lessons he learned there.
"Then mention to that atheist that this guy is now watched and listened to, on a daily basis, by millions of people all over the world and, to boot, sells millions of books.
"Then, while the non-believer is digesting all that, ask him or her if they still don't believe there's a God!"
Well, atheists? do you?

I'd always used O'Reilly as proof that there isn't a god.

So using Bill's (let's be generous and call it logic), would an example of somebody who has every advantage from birth and ****s it up be proof of no god?

Nobody here knew that Billy O. is the second coming? We know this because he hasn't been crucified yet.
I think what he said is similar to: "This day has this prophesy been fulfilled in your eyes", or however the big "J" said it.

The more I think about it, if O'Reilly's success is proof of any supernatural being, it would have to be one more inclined to making underhanded deals.

What's that, you're saying O'Reilly's been struck down by lightning?
(reads message thread)
No, obviously not.
Oh. Well, then, in my book, that's reason to chalk one up on the "evidence for no god" half of the blackboard... :)

O'Reilly's just a cheap, unfunny Colbert clone. I think there's a Prescott Pharmaceuticals remedy for him. (Side effects: gimlet balls; post-nasal droop, and pornographic pre-eclampsia.)

Oh, there is plenty of arrogance on both sides. And it generally backfires on the individual.

I know he was probably not being serious, but with O'Reilly, who knows? Carpenters in that day were upper middle class, not lower working class as he seems to imply. We also know from later descriptions of the clothes Jesus wore to the parties he was able to host that he was fairly well off later in life. Jesus was not poor and neither were his parents. Secondly, popularity is not any indication of truth. O'Reilly might have wanted to talk about the merit of some of the teachings of Jesus (though I doubt he's familiar with any of that) rather than appeal to popularity, because Islam and Hinduism are also quite popular last I checked.

Hmmm. If I did not know better I would swear there was a little wry humility in that statement. Like "only divine intervention could explain my popularity".
But from what I know he is neither that funny, nor that subtle.

Ah... that explains it. God was so damn busy making Bill-o into a media star that he didn't hear the cries of Elisabeth Fritzl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritzl_case) imprisoned in a basement for 24 years being repeatedly impregnated by her tormentor-father.
The arrogance of the holier-than-thou knows know bounds. Do they never understand how vile they sound to the faithful who didn't have their equally fervent "prayers" answered?
Crediting god or Jesus for good fortune never changes my atheism, but it does sound like a backhanded slap in the face towards other believers who certainly prayed and believed just as strongly to no avail. Isn't it like saying, "ha-ha... god likes me better than you"? What sort of petty god would be dashing around answering Bill O'Reilley's prayers while ignoring the pleas of Elisabeth Fritzl and thousands of other more worthy petitioners?
