What is a "hockey mom"?

Until Sarah Palin was plucked from obscurity, I'd never heard the term "hockey mom". Is it something peculiar to Alaska, or are they ubiquitous in the USA? It's presumably something to do with ice hockey, rather than the game popular amongst schoolgirls here, so perhaps they are to be found in Canada, also.

"Joe six-pack" is easier to understand, and sounds like a blue-collar worker.

"Soccer Mom" is more common around here (east coast u.s.)

Usually means a highly committed mother who drives her kid to all the games, and maybe roots violently for her own.

Parents who get too involved with the games and sometimes end up charged with assault seem to be getting more common, but I remember this very rudeness as far back as 1970, when I played Little League.

Something like that happens in the UK with kids playing soccer, but it's always the fathers who get aggressive.

Soccer Moms and Hocky Moms are one in the same. They drive an SUV, drink bottled water, wear designer sneakers and sweats, wear baseball caps with a pony tail out the back, cell phone while driving, and usually have white collar husbands footing the bills.

The reality is more likely to be our "capable" mom screaming herself hoarse at a bunch of offspring who aren't ready, can't find their gear, or who's dentist appointment was actually last week....
Then dealing with a husband who can't figure out why she's too tired for a tumble....

I was watching some of her interviews on Youtube last night. They made me squirm with embarassment, she was so inept. McCain even seemed embarrassed by her; at one stage he gazed heavenward and was probably saying to himself "God, why did I choose this woman!".
