I just finished reading the book "The Conquest of New Spain" by Bernal Diaz and it was absolutely incredible.

Amazon link to this book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0140441239/qid=1067447208/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-8052869-6996765?v=glance&s=books)

It tells of the army of Hernando Cortes and their journeys through Mexico as well as the details of many battles, and the way they doctored their wounds, their weapons of choice, and the politics and backdoor dealings of friend and foe alike.

Really a great book. Hope you can buy it or find it at your library.

And for some insight onto the same journey from the point of view of the Aztecs, read "Aztec", by Gray Jennings. Great book.

One of my all time favourites - been years since I've read it though, I must root it out when I get home.

Thanks for the reminder!

Brief hijack here...

I used to spend quite a bit of time doing business and rockhounding in the hills around the small pueblo of Bernal, Querétaro, Mexico (not named for Bernal Diaz). An extremely interesting area well off the beaten track, though I see someone has put together a nice little web site (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.de-paseo.com/turismo/Bernal.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dbernal%2Bqueretaro%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D% 26ie%3DUTF-8).

Anyhow the local joke to be sprung on the unsuspecting was informing them that a new gas (propane) office was opening in Bernal.

Bernal Gas. In Mexican colloquial Spanish ver nalgas means, literally, to see butt cheeks.

Hilarious fun.
