They awarded it to someone who really did something for peace.

OSLO, Norway (AP) - Finland's ex-president Martti Ahtisaari received the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his efforts to build a lasting peace from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Middle East.

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2008 to Martti Ahtisaari for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts. These efforts have contributed to a more peaceful world and to 'fraternity between nations' in Alfred Nobel's spirit," the committee said in announcing the prize.

By selecting Ahtisaari, 71, for the prize, the Nobel committee returned its focus to traditional peace work after tapping climate campaigner Al Gore and the U.N. panel on climate change last year.

The secretive five-member committee said that Ahtisaari's work across the world - Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East - proved that such efforts can have a profound effect on peace processes.

I would say last years recipient was the "shocker" and this years awardee was spot on and a reaffirmation of what the award should stand for and represent.

And as a bonus the Russians are now whining about it. That's enough to make it a good decision.

Wait, telling everyone how evil they are without actually doing anything isn't what the peace prize was for?

Guess I was wrong.

On a more serious note...finally.

Kissinger's was worse than Gore's but not as bad by a mile than Arafat's.
The point was this years winner makes them all look as undeserving as they were.

Hey. It was under Arafat that the PLO accepted Israel's right to exist. That was a huge step.

Am I allowed to nominate my Nan?
She's such a sweet inoffensive soul, and through no fault of her own she is forced to knock on her neighbours doors with some persistence in order to "work towards" peace.

Gore didn't do anything for "peace", but compared to many prize winners he's not so bad.
