What happens on December 7th? Does God take out all his anger on America?

I guess she figured a "Thank God for September 11th" sign might get her lynched, even in the bible belt.

Naaa. she is probably a Phelp follower, and they do carry signs saying "Thank God for September 11th" There is no depth of bad taste they won't sink to.

Oh, I pegged her for one of Phelps' slack jawed minions.
I didn't realize that they DID carry 'Thank God for September 11th' signs, though.
It's heartwarming to see what a good influence Christianity is on people, isn't it?

I hate to admit it, but "Thank God for September 11th" kind of makes a good point, although I probably would have replaced "thank" with "blame" and "God" with "God's mindless minions."

I believe that the Phelps group was protesting in Hawaii after they legalized gay marriage
there. What amazes me is how happy she is that thousands of US sailors lost their lives.
I guess they deserved it because of Hawaii's actions 60 years later.

People like that woman epitomizes everything that is wrong with religion. I'll concede that not all religion produces people like her, not even most of it, but I still have to ask whether the fact that a significant amount of it DOES produce people like her, is it worth it?

As scary, sad, and sick as it is to see adults spewing this sh*t, it's far worse to see them dragging their kids along to do it...
Almost makes me wish there was a god I could pray for the fate of the nation to...

It's people like them that make me wish there was a god so that when they died instead of going to heaven like they think they will they get sent to hell where they rightfully belong. That would be the ultimate in ownage.

So what exactly did the New York Fire Dept. (FDNY) do that has these people all riled up?

Barkhorn. I believe it had to do with Father Mychal Judge, the FDNY chaplain who perished on 9/11 while ministering to dying firefighters at the WTC site. According to many published reports, the good father was a homosexual. Certainly Judge was noted for his involvement in pastoral outreach initiatives directed at the gay community. This was apparently sufficient for Rev. Phelps to label the FDNY as a group of "fag enablers".
Rev. Phelps is a sinister clown, but interestingly his entry at AmIAnnoying.com (http://www.amiannoying.com/(kazggnaf5l5nsv45xarkxy45)/view.aspx?ID=6610) notes that in the 1960s he represented ten young black men who had been arrested in civil rights demonstrations (Phelps is also a lawyer), improbably managing to get them acquitted by an all-white jury. He also protested against the Ku Klux Klan, picketing under the slogan "GOD DIDN'T SAY DON'T BE BLACK". Phelps was honored with awards from the NAACP chapter in his home state of Kansas in the 1980s.
None of this excuses the manner in which Phelps has conducted his anti-gay crusade, but it is sad to see that someone whose faith formerly encouraged him to act (in some instances) for the greater good has become so misguidedly destructive.

More evidence that acting on the basis of faith is not as reliable as it's said to be. In the oft-quoted and apt words of Oliver Cromwell
I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken.

Reading that phrase reminded me of last nights South Park. Cartman decided tomake money by starting a Christian Rock band. He wrote his songs by taking other songs and replacing certain words with "Jesus". This lead to such lyrics as "I want to feel you deep inside me, Jesus" and my eprsonal favorite "I want to get down on my knees and please you Jesus. I want to feel your love all over my face".

I remember that in my younger and innocent days I thought that godhatesfags.com was a parody site about fundamental fundies. I just could NOT believe that any living human being could be that heartless a b*****d. It had to be a "joke".
Sadly, I was wrong...

I took a look at this thread, and could not see the pictures. So did a search on Phelps and the church site. It is perhaps ironic that the air force firewall will not let me visit either because they qualify as "hate sites" that are banned from government computers.
I'll take a look at this thread when I get home, though I think I get the basic message.

Hal, don't bother to look. The Air Force firewall is doing a good job for you. That stuff does not deserve the site-hits you would give it to look. Take it as read...

That did seem like an odd attack, based on what I've read from you.
Looking at the Rev. website, there's a few Fundie chicks that I'd volunteer to...uh...re-educate.

I had to walk past these Phelps people at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Philly several years ago. Same graphic signs, same smiling faces, same cute, sweet children, all of them singing hymns with beatific faces on the corner opposite the convention hall.
ActUp had shown up earlier in the day and got their butts put in jail for violently protesting the Phelps people's presence. Of course the Phelps people got to stay because they were being "civilized."
It makes me want to puke. And how do the parents explain to their children what the stick people are doing on those signs, anyway??
BTW, if you want some dirt on Phelps, there's a wealth of info
here. (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/michael_haggerty/expose3.htm) Also, this site (http://www.godlovesfags.com) is a direct response to Phelps' godhatesfags.com site.

On the upside, if society at large (read: america) is ever dominated by people that we (read:the elect) don't like, there's an increased probability of a massive volcano wiping out masses of them while leaving us untouched.
See, See! That's gonna end up as somebody's sigline at raptre ready or something.
We're no better than they are!
But we don't lynch people and stuff...

Maybe I sould start posting a non-appoligetic thread about all the good things that religions have done, ala evildave's "bad religion in the news" thread.
Nix that, can't be done without being pointless.
