View Full Version : Is my posting wearing thin on everyone?

Since Gravy's post about Parky and his threads, I've been thinking about my own posting in this subforum. I almost never post anything other than humorous barbs at the other side, since there are so many others who do a much better job with the facts than I could ever hope to. However, the post that Gravy made, got me to thinking maybe my own postings are wearing a bit thin on the "regulars" here.
So, let me know what you think. If I'm getting on your nerves, say so, and the consensus will prevail.
One note: CTers can certainly post here. However, your opinion is not what I'm looking for, and I reserve the right to mock you for posting in this thread. In fact, I consider it my patriotic duty to do so.

From someone who is also not as good with the facts as many of the other posters here, keep piling on the humorous barbs. Your 4,000 plus posts are an inspiration to all of us humorous barbers here at JREF.

I've pretty much resorted to the same, except my sense of humor is less well defined, I guess.
Responding with facts and science does nothing, so mockery is the most useful tool...

Occasionally I will simply point out inconsistencies or ask for evidence. But a majority of the time my posts are aimed at the movement or the poster. Yes, My name is DavidJames, and I attack the person not the argument. However, I do so only with those "persons" who have clearly defined themselves as a unthinking CTist, unable to offer an argument worth debating or one that has been put to bed hundreds of times before.
I try to limit such posts to one a thread. Most of the CTists these days are trolling only looking for responses. I oblige with one snarky one and move on.
To answer your question, barb and mock, but not so much as not to feed trolls with substance and we're good :)

Personally, I have advocated a place for humour, and just general chat. The new thread I created is for exactly that purpose.
If, IF I have an issue, it is merely with the signal to noise ratio that seems to be hampered when the subforum is filled with new threads of very little relevence and content. Note, I am not pointing to you in particular JBA.

I think you're one of the funny ones Jim. (The good funny ones that is - not the other 'funny' ones that sometimes take it upon themselves to post here ;))
It's pretty subjective isn't it? What constitutes humour or playful distraction in itself can arguably contribute to a general decline in discourse, and encourage the outright bad posts.
But if your posts are beyond the pale, so are those of many of my favourite posters here. And if it comes down to a vote, I say "Damn the pale!"

But if your humorous barbs aren't kept contained in this one area, won't they just spread to the other parts of the forum?
Serious answer: I don't think your posting style is a problem. As long as it is a real response to the opinion* presented, any reply is valid. The problem lies with the posts that are completely irrelevant to the topic, or where two or more people start going at it hammer and tongs with nothing more than insults. I figure if it goes beyond two or three responses without any progress being made, it probably isn't worth the effort. Snark-and-run is about all that is left at that point.

You got it all wrong. His jumping off point for humour and wit is the people (and I use the term loosely) who believe the murder of 3000 innocents was perpetrated by their own government, through a convoluted unbelievable conspiracy theory.
It's the last four words above that provide such a rich supply of material to use against those said people.
In other words, you actually supply the humour, JBA just repackages it professionally and fires it back where it belongs.

Yeah i can see where discussing the murder of three thousand innocents could be a jumping off point for your humor and wit, jim.
Is there a reason this self serving post is in 911 conspiracies, mods?
Yeah, because my humor is directed at them, isn't it? Why, I'd never make fun of people like you, who are pounding the internet to bring justice and truth to the people! Heaven forbid! That's such serious and important work, because without you, the corndog industry would totally collapse!
The mustard! Won't somebody please think of the mustard?

This is part of why a JimBenArm post is a must read for this taciturn Sith. You are very good with the barb, to the point where one might dub thee Sir Barbarella of Corndogia, or some such honorific.
As the ladies frequently pleaded to you: Don't stop
I like it. I'm going to change it to that!
Also, the ladies usually say: Don't. Stop.

Yes, because in the other forums we get to debate with fellow ADULTS and adjust our posting styles to reflect it.
This is the only area of JREF where mockery seems the most appropriate response the vast majority of the time. :p

Hmmmm. A couple hundred folks nation wide whining on the internet for 7 years claiming to have rock-solid, smoking-gun evidence of mass murder by the US government on 911 without even the slightest interest shown by mainstream media or investigative bodies from around the world.
Come on truthers you have to admit it--that's HILARIOUS!

Re. 'Is my posting wearing thin on everyone?'........... no, but your narcissism is.

I actually think it was an entirely legitimate question - there is a corps of sometime cheerleaders and sometime comics here, who don't frequently post useful information or engage in debate, but just try to inject a few giggles, wry observations and moments of moral support. Many, I suspect, are just like me; don't have a lot of substance to add, and are here principally to read the more erudite posters' contributions, and occasionally chip in when something strikes them as funny. Sounding out whether that is welcome is not narcissism, in view of all the soul-searching. Fortunately, the people have spoken - you may snipe at your leisure, and we may ignore you.

Oh, dear, Mr X. Have my pathetic attempts at humor upset you? You've seen right through me, to my very soul! I shall immediately not change anything I'm doing.

Why do you not love me? Oh, the agony of knowing there is one person among many who can't enjoy my levity!
Talk about narcissism. How many mirrors are in your house?
I recognize I'm an attention whore. Too bad your attempts at self-assessment failed.

C'est moi.
As a fellow barb-hurler and moral-support-lender, I have no problem with JBA's posting. I'll contribute useful information if I have it; but, since JREF is chockablock with people better-informed and quicker on the trigger than I, I frequently find myself reading threads and thinking "I wish I'd been here four hours ago."
Here's to you, JBA. *hoists a beverage*

Hey stop panicking.
There's nothing wrong with you..... (apart from the narcissism). But then who doesn't suffer from that now and then...... eh?
As for loving you.... now if you were JaneBenArm, you'd have a better chance.... ha! ..... sorry.
Anyway just be yourself...... and everyone will love you.

Any true auteur knows Ms. Anderson's best work was in "Snapdragon" and her failure to recapture such a heart-rendering performance in Barbwire was the... well... eighth or ninth most disappointing thing about that crapfest.
I've never seen "Snapdragon", but I want to. I think Pam's the most underated actress of all time. Her work in "Baywatch" was pure genius. She should be married to Brad Pitt, not what's her name.
