View Full Version : Does this worm warning tip work?

Received a tip saying I should create an entry in my address book: AAAAA@AAA.AAA

The idea is that if I get infected, the worm will try to spread itself by sending out copies, I will then know of the infection because I will get a message in my inbox saying that the mail to AAAAA@AAA.AAA (which of course I never sent) is undeliverable.

I've got a decent firewall and virus checker anyway, but is this tip likely to work for people who are not adequately protected?

No. By the time you're infected, it's too late.

I should also add that it doesn't even do that: if you've got like a SoBig on your system, the email to AAAAA@AAA.AAA won't be sent from "your" account, but from a spoofed address, most likely from your address book. So ceptimusbuddy@yahoo.com gets an email from AAAAA@AAA.AAA and the fake AAAAA@AAA.AAA gets (or doesn't, in this case) a fake email from ceptimusotherbuddy@isp.net.

This is old advice for a virus. There was one virus this would effect, if you had the right version of Outlook express.

I wouldn't bother with it. Just keep patched up, and look into a firewall.
