Ok. So I am talking to my wife tonight and we seen a trailor for a vampire movie. She freaked out a bit so I decided to make fun seeing that I loved the Lost Boy movie growing up. Turns out that with her first husband at 18 she was stationed out in Cali while he was in the army. She says that they went to a house of a friend who was enlisted and that he and his mother had garlic and huge crosses everywhere. Apparently so did all the neighbors. Are there really people out there who believe that if they do not have garlic strung up that vampires will swoop down and suck their blood? My wife is from Alabama, and had never heard of such a thing but it seems these people scared her enough that she has no interest in going back to California. I will admit that I never seen this one coming.

i dont think this is a conspiracy theory, might be better suited for general skepticism
as a fun fact, i read that the idea that garlic wards off vampires dates back to the days of the black plague, when people though the smell of the decaying bodies got them sick, so they wore garlic around their necks to overpower the smell of rotting flesh, this combined with the belief that the plague was caused by vampires or other supernatural beings to become the belief that vampires hate garlic

I love vampire movies! Is there a new one coming out? Do you remember the name of the movie in the preview? :D
I can't believe people would still think that vampires are real, but with the success of Anne Rice and HBO shows like Tru Blood there is certainly a fascination with them. I suppose the more gullible among us might believe they are true, but really, I would hope not.
However - given the type of stuff most woos believe in, vampires wouldn't be the oddest.

Good point. I can tell of one story where I hooked up with a chick one night, and aside from being a very white skin girl with dark makeup, she was hot. Once we were into the moment later on she attempted to bit me on the neck. At first I thought she was just kinky, but she later admitted to being a vampire in learning and she was one of many. I threw her out and never heard of this crap again. Seems there are more out there than I thought.
If this has to be moved, completely understand :D

There is a special on True Blood (I think it was called True Bloodlines) where they interviewed the cast, crew, and some people involved in other popular vampire movies and "vampire culture". The latter includes a guy that hosts "Dracula's Ball" and a woman that claims to be a "psychic vampire"... two woos for the price of one! Some of it may have been tongue-in-cheek, but it was tough to be certain. You may still be able to catch it if you have HBO Demand or if it re-airs.

Hmm, I will look for a minute to see if I can find it. Only thing that pops up is Daywatch, but it looks good too. But it is not the one that we seen previewed tonight. I will see if I can find before this gets relocated.

The movie is Twilight. It looks to be already popular by the site I found it on, but you can look more into if you like the movie.

Yeah, based on a young adult romancy type novel. I know a horde of females who are having way too much fun making fun of it in only the way people who would have once liked it when they were 14 can do. :D

I think the "Vampires" you see being interviews are more of people who are heavy, heavy, into roleplaying then any kind of conspiracy theory.
Me, my own favorites are Francis Coppola's "Bram Stroker's Dracula" (the only film that is really faithful to the S troker novel) "Nosferatu" (the 1922 Murnau film) and Buffy and the Scooby Gang exploits.

Cali (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cali) is a city in Columbia.
It has nothing to do with California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California).

Since people who do have garlic strung up have never been swooped by vampires, it must work.

If mosquitos and ticks qualify as vampires, yes. Though, DEET(N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) it is a lot more effective.

When I wrote that I was just too lazy to type out California. I do not know of the city, but many here in the south refer to the state as Cali. I assumed that it was obvious what I meant. To be more precise it was Sonoma, California. I agree with the others who said this is not CT so it should be moved. And now my wife accidentally read my later post and is asking about the hot chick that thought she was a vampire. :D

Back when I was a fresh Navy recruit, I did my tech school down at Corry Station in Pensacola, FL. There were apparently a group of some of the other students (EW/Crypto seems to attract special folks. :D) that would go off into the wooded areas near the barracks and LARP Vampire: The Masquerade. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire:_the_masquerade) I was standing a gate watch one night and heard wierd chanting and saw some odd shadows from the woods, so I called it in. The base security force went over and checked it out. The two guards came back laughing hysterically two minutes later. I believe the exact words they used were "Nothing to worry about, Seaman. Just a couple of geeks playin' grab-*** in the woods."

Best description of the "Vampires" I have seen.
My Wife and I have encountered them at SCA Events and some Victorian events we go to since we are both reenactors. Just a bunch of nerds carrying Role Playing to the heights of stupidity.

Is it just me, or are vampires, almost without fail, portrayed as bisexual affluent snobs in most media? Lost Boys was a pleasant exception.

I worked at Corry in the kitchen when I was in my early 20s. I used to love Sundays when all the Filipino women would bring food for a buffet. Thankfully there was a young girl my age who warned me not to try the blood pudding if I had never had it before. :sour:
I have to say that Lost Boys was one of my favorites growing up and you have a point about the sexuality of vampires. Even Tom Cruise seemed to be on the bi side.

Depends if you'd call the ones in Blade or Underworld "bisexual affluent snobs". Of course Vapires aren't real. Werewolves on the other hand.....

Snipes was not bi by any means, but that blonde guy on 1 or two could have passed for either or. The people in the rave on pt 1 had a fair share of BIs. Underworld not so much. I think it is more about the long hair "girly" guy type, less about sexuality, which is in almost all that I can think of, including Queen of the Damned.

Yeah...I'm referring to the fact that most movies portray them as victorian-esque, upper crust, elitist...rather dandy fops all around.
I would imagine if one was infected with such a disease it would be quite the opposite. After all, it's hard to amass the millions of dollars required to build your daylight-proof party house where all the other vamps hang out if you can't leave the house during banker's hours. Maybe they're e-traders?
I would picture a real person afflicted with vampirism being quite insane and disheveled-looking...sort of a leprous hunchback lurching from alley to alley looking for another homeless person not quite awake enough to mind some of his blood being taken.

Really? They did away with that little tradition before I got there then. Too bad, that sounds awesome. Nope, about all we got to eat was truckloads and truckloads of SYSCO food. Some of it wasn't that bad...of course we did have inmates from the Escambia County Jail doing work-release serving the food. I tell ya one thing though...I do NOT miss the march from the galley muster point ALL the friggin' way to the second-to-last classroom building where our classes were. If I never "mark time-MARCH!" again for the rest of my days, it'll be too soon.

I'm still not sure this is right, they weren't protrayed as such in any of the Dusk till Dawn series (even if they were crappy movies) or either John Carpenter's Vampires either. While the movie was comedy, Buffy the Vampire didn't have those sort of vampires, and of course those in the series weren't either, or in Angel. I have to admit I don't watch a HUGE number of Vampire movies and there is a lot out there, but those I have seen lately really don't treat Vampires in the way you say, Others (and again not neseccarily good movies) are the likes of Bloodranye and 30 Days of Night certainly don't. Nor do a lot of TV series that dealt with the matter, obviously Buffy and spin offs above, but also the likes of Forever Night and Kindred: the Embraced, a series base on the WoD Vampire: The Masquerade RPG. I guess what I'm saying is that in my own experience of Vampire movies, other than those with a period settling that puts them into that position (Interview with a Vampire and Dracula) they are generally treated quite different to what you suggest.

Well you have to remember that most vampires that are portrayed as rich are also very old, they have had a long time to gather together their fortunes, often hundreds of years. They generally have human servents to do the daily chores and protect their lair during the daytime as well.
I would picture a real person afflicted with vampirism being quite insane and disheveled-looking...sort of a leprous hunchback lurching from alley to alley looking for another homeless person not quite awake enough to mind some of his blood being taken.
Well Vampiric law describes the idea that feeding on human blood allows them to keep their youth and beauty, that if they fail to feed they start to age and look monsterous. The Masquerade created the idea of many different bloodlines and clans, and the Nosferatu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nosferatu_(World_of_Darkness)) would certainly fit the sort of vampire you describe.

You sir, have a knowledge of vampires bordering on the encyclopaedic.
I must now question both your motives and your allegiance to the humans.
I challenge you to a duel at first light.
(*under breath* If he's really one of THEM, then I got 'im!!!)
