Ninja Scroll. I can't get enough of the almost-but-not-quite invincible ogre.

got several hundred films, way to hard to pick a favorite.
Here is a couple that come to mind though. Urusei Yatsura and Princess Mononoke

I must be one of the few who finds most anime unwatchable. There are some great nuggets out there. But most of what I've seen seems eye candy squarely aimed at adolescents. Maybe it's a cultural thing. I consider anime the most disappointing genre.

It's a generational thing, you must be too old to appreciate it.
I know the Japanese have my back on this.

Akira is a prime example of what I mean. I think I would have loved it as a 13 year old. As a geezer of 36, I think it's a yawn.

My favorites are Spirited Away, Castle of Cagliostro, the Lupin III series, and FLCL. Cowboy Bebop had a lot of potential, but it didn't really come together as a series for me.

Hmmm... tricky question, this one..
Favourite movie would probably be End of Evangelion. The "third impact" sequence is possibly the most amazing piece of cinematic art I've ever seen, and is one of the few pieces that have ever made me cry. Other favourites are Grave of the Fireflies, Akira and Ghost in the Shell.
Favourite series, I'd say Evangelion, Witch Hunter Robin and Love Hina. I love the style of Bebop, but it didn't really come together the way I'd hoped it would.

As much as I dislike Evangelion, I have to admit that the third impact sequence was visually amazing. I didn't mention Witch Hunter Robin because I haven't finished watching it yet, but what I have seen is pretty great.

Oh yes, Love Hina is my favorite romantic comedy. Unlike others in the genre the story actually moves, the relationships change and develop, rather than stay pretty much the same. For example Tenchi, which after 9 different versions goes nowhere and ends up more parodying itself than developing.
(also got tired of the cliche of the nice guy with a horde of hot women in love with him, and not even trying to date any of them)

All of my friends like it, but I honestly find most anime very, VERY poorly written. Most of the characters (Whether they be a lab scientist or 1000 year old demon) act like junior high kids.
Although the style can be nice, I find it to be overly simplistic most of the time. (Actually, it's not only the art that I find too simple...there's also the relationships, the motives, ect)
One of the only series I enjoyed was Gundam Wing, and even then... The last show was very good, though. Endless Waltz.
Do you know what I would like? An animated show that is geared towards an older audience (Note: That does NOT mean nudity or profanity), and perhaps in a different drawing style.
Something like this, maybe? (http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/(random)/zone/j/o/jordan79/jordan79.html)
Edited to add: Well, his art is kind of anime-ish. It's nicely original, though.

I'm 42, and I still think it's incredible. There's one scene; it's a flashback scene in a school that looks overexposed, mostly a dumb show with flute music over it, that punches me in the heart no matter how many times I see it.
But then again, I still think that Walt Disney's Pinnochio is incredible, so what do I know?

Sen to Chiharu Kamikakushi (for storytelling purposes only)
Mononoke Hime was okay, too
Cowboy Bebop was good.
Inuyahsa movie 1 was pretty decent.
Macross: Do you Believe In Love? was okay
Naussica and the Valley of the Wind was nice
On Your Mark was my fave, though it was only about, what 8 minutes tops?
Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 1 and 2 were decent
And Mononoke was harmful only if you tick them off. It's really easy to tick them off, though.
Fave series:
(Currently:)
Fruits Basket
Yami no Matsuei
Gensoumaden Saiyuki
Haibane Ranmei
Hana Yori Dango

Didn't care much for the Nausicaa movie. It was ok, but such a cut down version of the manga. It's like trying to squeeze Lord of the Rings into one movie by having the Crack of Doom comming to the Shire.

Akira has got to be the all time classic, genre-defining anime film. My next favourite is Wings of the Honneamise, 'cos in tone and pace it's almost the opposite of Akira, but equally as moving. I admit I haven't watched much anime in the last 10 years, apart from some films I taped off the sci-fi channel last year, most of which were utter tripe and I gave up after Adventure Kid/Adventure Duo.
Out of interest, what's your pronunciation of anime? A-NEE-may? Ani-MAY? Some other version?
Uther

I say ani-MAY, personally.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Wicked City. I really liked that one. Akira is a classic, and is what got me into anime. I also liked Spirited Away, Ninja Scroll, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, and in a disturbingly perverted way, Urotsukidpji: Legend of the Overfiend.

I have far too many Ruroni Kenshin DVD's -- and I quite like them.
I liked Trigun a lot.
I actually ended up liking Outlaw Star more than I though I should.
But 'Grave of the Fireflies' is so incredibly moving, that I have yet to see anything compare to it, animated (or non-animated). Except possibly 'My neighbor Totoro', though it was a very different sort of moving.

I know a librarian with a Pen-pen-like haircut with the last name 'Fenwick'. I call her Fen-fen the warmwater librarian. I don't know if she gets the joke yet.

I'm a certified anime geek.
Favorite series (no particular order):
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Azumanga Daioh
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo (His and Her Circumstnaces)
Serial Experiments Lain
Haibane Renmei
Others towards the top:
Excel Saga
Cromartie High School
NieA_7

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Kodomo no Omocha
Scrapped Princess
FLCL
Movies:
Pretty much anything to come out of Studio Ghibli

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind
Akira
(after you read these two, it's difficult to watch the movies wrenched from their pages)
Great Teacher Onizuka
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Stuff I'm currently watching (or will be soon):
Naruto
One Piece
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Kaleido Star
Read or Die TV
RahXephon (on DVD)

My anime knowledge could be written on the back of a postage stamp, but I've watched most of the Studio Ghibli stuff barring Princess Mononoke and enjoyed it - Totoro was really gently funny and silly, Spirited Away was visually spectaculr, although I got lost on the story in Japanese.
Series-wise, my wife watches Inuyasha, which I don't really like at all, all swords-and-schoolgirl-skirt nonsense; Conan, which is really just animated Columbo; and Chibi Mariko san, or whatever, which is aimed at primary-school kids, but at least it means they use easier-to-understand language!

Favorite movies:
Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away... very eager to see some of the other stuff from Studio Ghibli.
Vampire Hunter D (actually I liked the sequel better)
Cowboy Bebop (the movie's essentially just a two-hour-long episode of the series)
Favorite series:
Hamtaro (hem hem... guilty pleasure, reminds me of the Smurfs with which I grew up)
Cowboy Bebop (remains my all-time favorite)
Inuyasha (though less than I used to)
Record of Lodoss War (love the D&D-esque setting)
Read or Die (three episodes counts as a series right?)
I regard most anime from the perspective of an outsider looking in. I don't like most of what I see (that's actually the topic of my website (http://www.rpgmaker.net/~brickroad)), but I do find that I like enough of it to keep watching.

Clamp has had a new manga series out, it's a crossover called XXXHolyC and Reservoir Chronicles. The RC characters are crossover from the series Cardcaptor Sakura. Except alternate reality. Clamp is great:
Secret Chaser, Gahou Drug, Clover, Suki dakara Suki(?), Shirahime, Rayearth, Angelic Layer, Chobits, Rex, RG Veda, Tokyo Babylon, X, Koi, Mensou Onegai desu ka, Clamp Campus Detectives, Cluster, 3 I cannot name (one had a gorgeous butterfly-fairy inside the cover, another had 2 private detectives, and the other has a girl samurai), Dukalyon, Wish, Cardcaptor Sakura, Miyuki Chan.

I'm more of a manga geek these days. I've slowly stopped enjoying anime even though I lived, breathed and ate it in University. I survived for a week on a Sailor Moon tape once -- although I don't recommend it as all the sugary melodrama gives you bad hallucinations.
It may be that a lot of the shows I've seen lately *are* boringly adolescent, or rehashing the same-old. Anyway, these are my favourites:
Series:
Berserk - stupid Berserk. I love it. It's like a bruise I can't stop poking.
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Vision of Escaflowne
Combustible Campus Guardress - because sometimes, you can't help loving something stupid
Tenshi ni Narumon
Lain
Evangelion
Record of Lodoss War (OVA)
Rurouni Kenshin (OVA) - the first one -- absolutely beautiful
Samurai Pizza Cats
Vampire Princess Miyu (OVA)
Movies:
Akira - for the beautiful soundtrack and animation, if nothing else
Silent Moebius 1 & 2
Ghost in the Shell
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Jin-Roh
Patlabor 1 & 2
Everything I've seen by Miyazaki so far.
Manga:
Akira
Nausicaa
Blade of the Immortal
Everything by Masamune Shirow
Waiting for Berserk manga now.
