View Full Version : Dr. Pepper, not under god.

And they got criticized for this.

That's the way I learned it. That's the way I say it.

Snopes has covered this. What a stupid piece of nonsense. You do understand that soda cans are fairly small? And that trying to put "One Nation, Under God, Indivisible" might not fit if one wants it to be fairly legible? And that Time Magazine had One Nation...Indivisible on their cover after 9/11 and no one cared?

Yes, I understand. So what?

That's the way I learned it, but not the way I say it. I prefer the traditional way. Call me old fashioned.
Jeff Corey
17th November 2008, 07:39 PM
Now I'm confused. Which way did you learn it? Was it before 1954?
tyr_13
17th November 2008, 07:45 PM
No, I learned it with the stupid insertion, "under god," but I don't say it that way.

It's odd that the "...under God" even caught on at all. I mean, people aren't usually so receptive to change, especially dealing with things as traditional as America's Pledge of Allegiance. I wonder how long this will take to catch on:
My country,' tis of thee,
sweet land of Godliness, of thee I sing;
land where my fathers worshiped God,
land of the God-fearing pilgrims' pride,
from every goodly Christian church let freedom ring!

In high school, the teachers told me to "say it right".
I told one that I was saying it correctly.
I wonder why I never got the grades to be valedictorian or salutatorian.
No, I don't really wonder. I was lazy, reading stuff that wasn't assigned* and didn't really care.
*Except for one course. We were assigned Brave New World, 1984 or Darkness At Noon. I told the teacher that I had read them all. She said that I should find another. So I faked it with Space Merchants. I was told that was not 'litterachure', but science fiction trash.

Sorry, that one is not official,, but this one should be.
THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
words and music by Woody Guthrie
Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
Or the one by Joe Hill Pie in the Sky when You Die:
Long-haired preachers come out every night,
Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right;
But when asked how 'bout something to eat
They will answer with voices so sweet:
CHORUS:
You will eat, bye and bye,
In that glorious land above the sky;
Work and pray, live on hay,
You'll get pie in the sky when you die.
The starvation army they play,
They sing and they clap and they pray
'Till they get all your coin on the drum
Then they'll tell you when you're on the bum:
Holy Rollers and jumpers come out,
They holler, they jump and they shout.
Give your money to Jesus they say,
He will cure all diseases today.
If you fight hard for children and wife --
Try to get something good in this life --
You're a sinner and bad man, they tell,
When you die you will sure go to hell.
Workingmen of all countries, unite,
Side by side we for freedom will fight;
When the world and its wealth we have gained
To the grafters we'll sing this refrain:
FINAL CHORUS:
You will eat, bye and bye,
When you've learned how to cook and to fry.
Chop some wood, 'twill do you good,
And you'll eat in the sweet bye and bye.

Should this be in the paranormal section?
Jeff Corey

What? You mean you think that the existence of an invisible omnipotent being that jumpstarted the universe and watches all the time to make sure we follow all its rules so we get to go to heaven and get goodies every year on the anniversary of his illegitimate son's death is a belief in a paranormal being?
Get real.

I teach high school, and here in Illinois the Pledge is put on the PA every morning at the start of school. I neither require my students to even stand, nor do I usually acknowledge that that Pledge is going on. I just get things in order for class. No one gives me any grief for it either - they know better than to mess with me (seeing as how I'm one of those pesky people who knows their rights rather thoroughly).
In addition, on the wall of my classroom I have a copy of the original Pledge - without the words "under God" - and I point it out to the class at the beginning of every year (I usually say, "Just in case you cannot remember the words."). Always a good conversation starter :)
Those folks criticizing Dr. Pepper need to pull the sticks out of their collective asses and get a life

Gots tenure, right?

The Pledge business started before I had tenure. And no one gave me trouble then, either. Yes, I know - I'm lucky. But it's more than luck - I know how to protect myself, trust me ;)

That would be great on a sticker, a play on the, "got milk," ones.

I find all this quite odd, compared to a Scottish schooling.
Had anyone ever expected us to salute a flag, or pledge allegiance to anything, we would have been completely baffled- and scornful.
ETA- I was at a wedding a couple of years ago, in an old stately home outside Glasgow- now part of a park and museum complex.
The groom was in the Royal Air Force, but chose not to wear uniform for his wedding, going for a kilt instead.
There had been some sort of American function earlier in the day and a tasselled stars-and-stripes still stood in the reception room.
It appears in several of the wedding photos. Nobody thought to remove it , or even mentioned it. This was (I think), neither respect nor disrespect, but simple total uninterest. I doubt most folk even noticed it. I wonder whether the same would be the case had the wedding been in (say) an ante-bellum mansion in Virginia and a UK flag happened to be there?
Would it have been moved out of shot? Or would it have gone unnoticed?

Like most traditions learned in childhood, people saying it rarely, if ever, even think about the words. It's just a ritual for the most part.
If anyone told us Yanks to ask God to save a Queen, we would have been pretty scornful as well. We Americans will pledge allegiance to brightly colored cloth, but no way would we do the same thing to a person!

Well- considering who we get as king if she dies, I hope she makes it to 100.

Well, as a Southerner, I find the "indivisible" part hard to swallow. Forget God, what about the right to self-determination? What about the War of Northern Aggression? Keep your laws off of our bodies!

It was probably mostly the southern congresscritters who voted for adding "under God".

On account of potty mouth. I know I should have tagged it such, but by the time it occurred to me, too much time had passed.

How about "over God" instead of "under"?

You really can't be so obtuse as to not realize that this subject is tongue n check. Do you have no sense of humor??? Maybe you should step down as an administrator. You do understand, you can not run this board with a stick up your ass.
