I recently came across the Christchurch City Library's website. Among their extensive collection of scanned material is the Christchurch Star's edition of 23 November 1963.
A mixture of luck (due to the timing of the assasination) and hard work meant that the paper was one of the first to be published with extensive coverage of JFK's death. The website neatly debunks the conspiracy theory that the coverage was written before the assasination and explains how the paper managed to get the story so quickly.

On a similar note my local paper was able to run 9/11 on the front page of the morning paper. Turned out one of the Editors was playing online poker when he got alerted. Called the paper and did the "Stop the Press" thing, had the old front page yanked and got it rewritten complete with images and had it down to the presses. It meant the paper was an hour late out that morning (6am instead of 5am) but they got the scoop that every other paper in the country missed.

Could you post a link to the relevant web pages, gtc? I've got a friend who buys into the JFK conspiracy and has cited the newspaper thing as part of the proof.

Cripes. If these CTists have no idea how he world goes round and round and stuff, and how other countries are in different time zones, and how the International Date Line works... FSM help them! :boggled:

Not much point in recommending a website if I don't link to it.
The key point is that the newspaper was published in the afternoon (around 6 hours after the assassination) not the morning as claimed in the CT. The background information about Lee Harvey Oswald was available from the American wire services so quickly because they had already covered his defection to the USSR and subsequent return.
