I thought this would be appropriate to post here, since I have not seen a thread on this story yet...

Many mornings I spend a bit of time glancing through various news sources to see what’s going on in the world that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert did not cover the previous night.
So this morning, I was on MSN, and came across this story: Chilean cardinal: Madonna rouses ‘impure thoughts’ (http://music.msn.com/music/article.aspx?news=343586&GT1=28102)
Thinking that perhaps Madonna did something newsworthy (like maybe she ****ed a goat or Dennis Rodman or something else equally offensive) I clicked on the link to see what the story was all about.
Madonna is causing “crazy enthusiasm” and “impure thoughts” on her first concert visit to Chile, a prominent retired cardinal complained on Wednesday,
Ok, so far we’re fine. I may not agree with his point of view, but he has not gone off the realm of sanity yet. While I may agree that at times artists and musicians have done things that I find to be in poor taste, I think that part of art (and I do consider music to be an art form) is pushing boundaries, and thus you’re likely to offend people sometimes.
So I’d say so far we can agree to disagree, at least until you finish reading this sentence.
…as he paused in a tribute to a late dictator to denounce the pop star.
Roman Catholic Cardinal Jorge Medina criticized the flamboyant singer during his homily at a Mass in honor of the late dictator Augusto Pinochet, who oversaw the deaths of some 3,200 dissidents during his 1973-1990 rule.
And there he goes off the deep end… I had too check if I was on The Onion’s site for a second, to be sure this was not satire, but no, the URL’s domain is clearly music.msn.com.
“This woman comes here and in an incredibly shameless manner, she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts,” said Medina
Ok, I can agree that 20 years ago for most, 10 years ago for many, and as late as 5 years ago for some, that Madonna did inspire “an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts”. I know for me growing up as a kid in the 80’s, she certainly did for me at times in some videos.
*thinks back* ahhhh
But really, isn’t this criticism AT LEAST a decade too late? This seems to me, to be a lame attempt from a backwater bishop (and yes I know he’s a cardinal, but I like my phrase better, so deal with it) to gain notoriety for himself.
Then I finally made it to the end of this article, and notice the following:
Medina said that some of those who claim to seek justice for violations of human rights under the dictator are actually seeking revenge.
Really, he’s defending somebody accused of human rights violations, but bashing a singer? Obviously the 3000 deaths mentioned earlier already made the Cardinal look *********** nuts, but this is just putting an extra emphasis on it.
So i had ot have a quick look into this guy, just to see what Wikipedia says about Augusto Pinochet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusto_Pinochet):
From the beginning, the military government led by Pinochet implemented harsh measures against its political opponents, which included systematic suspensions of civil liberties and violations of human rights and for which he faced several criminal indictments beginning in 1998 until his death in 2006.
Turns out you don’t have to read too far before you get an idea of what type of a person the Cardinal is celebrating.
*sigh* Don’t you just love hipocracy in it’s finest…
