Hmmph.
Judging by the shock I've heard about, you'd think they had photoshopped in a halo.
Or two.

For some reason, I just find religion endless fodder for amusement.
In any case, it looks like it makes for great publicity whenever you can offend the holier-than-thou.
I'm sure many marketing executives are taking notes.

I always had a thing for Olivia Hussey.
Also, she has a kid.
Apparently she has two, doesn't Jesus have a brother or something? (which would make Mary no longer a virgin...)

Looking for the Catholic response to this (not too much on Google's first search page yet) I found what looks like a very long history of the Catholic Church's interest in Playboy as a whipping post. I had no idea the Catholics hated Playboy so much.

Nor does a sheet over ones head and a stained glass window indicate one is a virgin-- much less "posing as the Virgin Mary"...
I think some religious people take their iconography way too seriously and are eager to take offense and imagine persecution where there is none.
On the other hand, their reaction certainly increases sales of the the things they disapprove of. I applaud this. One can always count on bringing loud attention to themselves if they can ruffle the feathers of the Catholics.

Let's not pretend Playboy didn't know what they were doing. Of course they were going for the image of the Virgin. They chose a girl named Mary (granted, extremely common in Mexico), the cover says "We adore you, Maria" which has the double meaning of worship and love, the article is titled "Blessed be," and it was released within days of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is a rather important religious icon in Mexico. It's a publicity stunt, it will work, and more power to them.

That's true - aggravatingly so in that you've just described a surprising number of pictorials inside the goddamn magazine.
Focus: Now I know what made God's knees knock. She's always looked so plain in those statues in church.

If you remember waaaayyyy back to when Madonna (the singer) did a display in one of those magazines (never saw it, but remember the joke about it looking like she had Willie Nelson in a headlock), Hustler had a cartoon about having the "real Madonna" posing for them.
So it's an old joke.

If you hit the full set of pics listed, there is one full frontal in it. As I am at work and can't get to it, you'll have to wait or check yourself for it's existence. Looks like the Mexican Playboy is where ours was 30 or more years ago in exposure unless this one is less exposure than the norm for them.

I think posing with a big-ass religious-looking crown and a veil indicates one is posing as the virgin Mary though, even if that's all one is wearing.
(Picture 7 and 8. NSFW, unless your workplace approves of boobs.)

I'm unfamiliar with the crown as a part of Mary's religious iconography. I assumed they were playing off multiple "mary"s

Please don't lose track of this:
The Virgin Mary was the hottest woman in existence at the time.
Even in the old paintings, she's no dog.
She was also a teenager.
There's a reason God chose her to impregnate.
You don't hear much about other women God may have knocked up.

Old indeed. Sexualized depictions of Mary go way back in her iconography as well. I think I recall an historian even arguing that many depictions of her tend to serve as excellent examples of the physical ideal for women at the time.
It's a pretty ridiculous provocation, but in a time when virgins seem to be becoming less of an ideal, perhaps they're doing the Catholic Church more of a favor than they'll get credit for.

Playboy apologized...
In a statement Saturday, Playboy Enterprises Inc. apologized for the distasteful cover.
“The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.”
“While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies.”

Remind me, what's the Church's official position on masturbation?Of course, should of thought of that. If you're against masturbation, you would likely be against aids in committing the sin as well. D'oh!
Catechism of the Catholic Church (from the Vatican website (http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a6.htm)Offenses against chastity
2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.
2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."137 "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."138
To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.
For a really ignorant view, see this site. (http://www.couragerc.net/PIPMasturbation.html)
These guys are sick, (sorry Disbelief). Even as they excuse the reason behind viewing masturbation as a sin by equating it with spoiling your chastity, when asked if it's OK then if you are married, instead of saying, sure, the two sites I looked at (the one above and another with priests answering lay questions (http://www.stspeterpaul.san-francisco.ca.us/church/ask_the_fathers_sexuality.htm)), talked around the answer instead. They focused on the reasons one would not be getting it directly from the wife. And, it doesn't even seem to dawn on them woman masturbate too.
