Damn it! This is the exact mentality that this forum simply doesn't need. Without the fire, the drive, the passion for triviality, R&P would be doomed, DOOMED I say, to the plodding, dreary, bourgeois mentality demonstrated by the Politics sub-forum. I know with 100% certainty (no mealy-mouthed agnosticism here!) that without the dedication to semantics displayed by the valiant posters in the threads found within this hallowed sub-forum, I would run the risk of actually get some paying work done one of these days.

Why I am an apathetic about athe... never mind

Why you're apathetic about simply typing a thread title without typos? Yeah, why is that you're apathetic about that? You wanna tell me? How about you, for once in a lifetime, tell me what's going on with your life? What's wrong with you? Do you think you can spend the rest of your life just prancing around aimlessly? What's the matter? Why don't you, for a change, tell me what's concerning you?

Hokulele
16th December 2008, 10:50 PM
You know what, Hokulele, we don't need your attitude around here, so just go away.

Wrong! My attitude is exactly what a slacky-pants such as yourself needs. If it weren't for the dynamic contrast exhibited by the juxtaposition between my inflamed rhetoric and your lackluster acceptance of the status quo, the lurkers might get the idea that this forum is populated by nothing but, well, stoners.

Or stay.

Oh yeah? You can't make me stay that easily!

By accepting him into your hearts, you too know the Truth that this world is but a shell and in knowing him we are assured entrance into Heaven (£15 single, £40 family ticket; no outside food).

Because you know this in your heart, the holey spirit stops you from bothereing with anything in this world. Sit around, believe, don't shake more than twice (you know why) and everything'll be just fine after you die. I am so glad that I have been given this opportunity to teach you the Truth about his stultifying love for you. Praise the Lard.

Are you using the term apathetic in it's weak or strong sense? I think it's important we consider the definition. The English apathetic derives from the seventeenth century French apathie, in turn from the Latin apathīa, which seems to have entered the tongue from the Greek apátheia. Now of course this means we have to understand the use of ἀπάθεια in Greek philosophy, where it roughly can be described as "peace of mind", or a state of emotional detachment arrived at by letting go of worldly problems. It is in fact in it's original sense as seen in the Stoic usage a positive rather than a negative state - rather than a state arrived at by passivity, as in "Am I bothered?" it is perhaps closer to the Buddhist notion of release from worldly desires, and something achieved by heroic effort...

As such I think we must concede that most modern Apatheists are in fact not at all apathetic - they are merely uncommitted. This can be described as weak apatheism, as opposed who actually embrace Stoicism, and practice strong apatheism.

Also, let us consider the valuable insights to be found in
Like a Rock or like God? The Concept of apatheia in the monastic Theology of Evagrius of Pontus by: Bocher Rasmussen (http://www.citeulike.org/author/Rasmussen), Mette Sophia (http://www.citeulike.org/author/Sophia)
Studia Theologica, Vol. 59, No. 2. (December 2005), pp. 147-162.

Abstract

This article is an attempt to clarify the concept of apatheia as it appears in the Praktikos of Evagrius of Pontus. The condition (katastasis) of apatheia is central to the Evagrian understanding of the goal of monastic life, and the Praktikos is the treatise in the writings of Evagrius which deals most thoroughly with apatheia. The thesis of the article is that apatheia should be understood in terms of the Platonic distinction between stability and movement, and apatheia, thus, appears to be two different kinds of conditions, namely imperfect apatheia, related to the daily ascetic struggle of the monks against the demons and the thoughts, and perfect apatheia, related to the peaceful condition of undisturbed prayer, in which the mind contemplates the holy Trinity.

I think that this neatly illustrates the distinction between my proposed categories of weak and strong apatheism in the 4th century Hellenistic mindset: here of course the authors are examining the ideas central to the Greek ascetic corpus. I'd really like to drone on about this for about thirty pages, especially with reference to the dismal lack of faith healing training among British lollipop ladies, and the international aspects of road safety statistics with particular reference to the self-referential issues raised by an idealist philosophical stance on this important matter -- unfortunately I lack the will (from the Old High German wellan) to do so, so I won't...

I'm glad you posted this, cj.23. Until now I couldn't be bothered to post in this thread, because it seemed too much effort to think of anything to say that wouldn't, by virtue of my actually taking the trouble to say it, be off-topic. I can now remain in keeping with the topic by making an heroic effort to post and say that I am entirely at peace with my apathy, and desire nothing more in the context of this thread.

Unfortunately, that rather closes the door on posting in it a second time. But I feel at peace with that too.

__________________________________________________ ________

No, really. Never mind.

Don't be apathetic

Be pathetic!

From Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia: Athe (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Athe)
Athe is the supreme Goddess of Atheism. She exists, but does not want anyone to know, and will actively kill anyone who says that She does... Oh no! Spare me, Atheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee1flqajv pcoasvjzjs

Her full name is Athe Nogod Antichrist (acronym Athena, who is also the goddess of civilization, specifically wisdom, weaving and crafts). This is why all Atheists are wise, creative and intelligent. She also has a sister called Antithe and a twin sister named Athena who share the same mother Hera. She used to be the Greek goddess of skepticism, and worked with Athena goddess of wisdom, but decided to form her own religion, or non-religion as it were.

Our god is infinitely more hawt (http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Athe) than any other god!
