Nov. 6, 2003 -- NPR will benefit from a bequest of more than $200 million from the estate of philanthropist Joan B. Kroc, NPR President Kevin Klose announced Thursday.

"Joan Kroc believed deeply in the power of public radio to serve the communities of America," Klose said. "She made this extraordinary gift from her steadfast conviction that NPR and our member stations provide a vital connection to millions of listeners."

Most of the money -- described by NPR as "the largest monetary gift ever received by an American cultural institution" -- will go toward the NPR Endowment Fund for Excellence, created in 1993 to provide support for NPR activities independent of other revenue sources.

Good- conservatives can't thrive unless liberals exhibit themselves. We need people to see and hear the contrast between the two groups. Otherwise, we appear as mere equals with the same values but different methods... which is completely untrue.

IMO, NPR is the most entertaining radio station.

You misunderstand how divisive progressives can be towards each other. NPR was teetering on the edge of respectability before, and now it's fallen deeply into the "corporate whore" chasm. The "PETA and animal rights dupes" will cry into their Mother Jones and stop worshipping Sylvia Poggioli.

I say good for NPR! What radio shows spend more than 30 seconds on a news topic? What passes for 'in depth' in other news radio is
opinionated arguing call in shows with commercials every 10 minutes.

Don't take my sarcasm wrong, I love NPR, too. I'm a member of my local station. It's one of the best news sources out there.

I just found it amusing that NTW here thinks NPR is the news source for extreme leftists everywhere, when the extreme leftists think NPR is too mainstream, too commercial and too conservative for them.

I'm willing to bet that he thinks Fox "News" is fair and balanced, too. I always found it amusing that Fox calls all of the other networks liberal, and imply that they (Fox) are the only fair and balanced network. In reality, most of the other networks are fair and balanced, while Fox is conservative.

I often listen to NPR and I have been a member of my local station for several years.

By the way, in all accuracy, one should note that while Ray Kroc may have built the business that ended up funding the gift, Ray Kroc himself died a few years ago and it was his late wife, Joan Kroc, who actually provided the gift.

Conservatives feel that any media outlet that dares to point out just what the current right-wing "leaders" are doing is Liberal-biased, or even "Communist".

It's all part of the plan for total control of the media.

I fear they may be winning. Even NPR often seems to shy away from criticism of the Repugnicans or the religious right.

I am still a member of my local NPR station, and let them know how I feel about their coddling of the rabid right.

a) no, it has been ABC, NBC, and CBS that has been that way for 40 years, and more recently CNN. Include the New York and LA Times and the Boston Globe.

b) conservatives have FOX, maybe one big newspaper, and AM-talk radio; altogether, we are much smaller than the liberal media.
