Expect this story to be touted as proof of the power of prayer and of the existence of God.

"We don't know if it is a miracle yet. She is doing as good as she can," a man who identified himself as the girl's grandfather told the Times. He said it was too early to know if Mackayala would recover.

What does he mean, "We don't know if it is a miracle yet"? If the child is found to have severe brain damage, will he consider it not to be a miracle?

arctic---Maybe that's exactly what the grandfather is getting at. If the child lives and is pretty brain dead or has losses of function, the 'miracle ' could instead turn into a miraculous hell for the family.

Exactly.
The miracle is if no charges of child endangerment are filed.

Update- not quite a miracle. Very sad story
http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/12/10/revived.toddler/index.html
ORANGE, California (CNN) -- The 22-month-old toddler hailed as a "miracle child" when she was revived nearly an hour after being declared dead has suffered a severe brain injury, her doctors said Wednesday.
.....
The toddler was discovered floating facedown in a backyard swimming pool November 7. The hospital where she was taken had declared her dead. Then nearly 40 minutes later, the child showed signs of life.
.....
Mackayala's current physicians said Mackayala's most severe injuries probably occurred in the immediate aftermath of her plunge into the swimming pool.
An attorney for the Jespersen family said they would wait for the results of the state investigation before deciding whether they will file a lawsuit.
I remember seeing interviews with officer who saw that she was alive, and with family members. They all said God wanted her alive, it was a miracle -it is heartbreaking, they want to believe and I can't say I blame them.
It is cases like these that just make me very sad for the families. Sometimes, when people claim God spared them in an accident their arrogance at being "chosen" makes me angry- but these case the girl is so ill, and I think religion was used to console the family, give them hope.
Of course, had the girl survived with no brain damage, it would have been to God's credit, not the doctors- since she did not, it is the fault of the doctors. We have seen this many times.
This reminded me of another recent story, about a girl surfer who was attacked by a shark and had her arm bitten off. I saw an interview with her, and she says it was all God's plan, and meant to be, and it was a miracle, because shark only got her arm. She said that people are believing in God because of this, so there must have been a reason. She is obviously so talented, and it must have been very traumatic. People do what they must to get over these things. Once again, no heart to even think of criticizing a young girl or her family for taking solace in religion at this time.

In one of the first, she told The Associated Press she will surf again despite her loss. "I can't change it," she said. "That was God's plan for my life and I'm going to go with it."
....
Hamilton said she doesn't like interviews, but she added that some good can come out of her story. She talked about how she was told that two young girls "came to know the Lord" because of her demonstration of faith during tragedy.

In one incident with which I have some familiarity, a young lady survived a very serious car crash. She was in a coma with a severe head injury, but she survived, and she was expected to come out of her coma after a while. Her family said it was a "miracle."
The girl eventually came out of her coma, and the "miracle" evaporated. The young lady's closed head injury had brought about serious changes in the her personality. It was as though the person who woke up from the coma was an entirely different person. And not only that, the person who woke up was ill-mannered, excessively selfish, and had very little self-control. Far from being a miracle, the family went through hell.
As it happened, the medical personnel had told the family that if the young lady were to regain consciousness, changes in personality were to be expected. The family was so caught up in the "miracle" aspect of her survival that this warning went in one ear and out the other.

Hey, guys, didn't you get the memo? Anytime anything happens that's not 100% bad, it's a miracle. Baby born? Miracle. Out of a coma? Miracle. Almost but didn't stub your toe? Miracle.
