I have now heard 3 works by Osvaldo Golijov, who some apparently think is the hottest classical composer alive today: The Prayers and Dreams of Isaac the Blind, Oceana, and Azul. While I found some of the performances very entertaining (in particular, Azul), I'm not convinced that his music will have a lot of staying power. To me, it lacked the depth that I expect from classical music. A friend who is a music historian and attended the same performance of Azul as I did wrote that she found it to have "too much repetition" and "too many bland sounds". But to be fair, I've only heard each work once. Have I just not "gotten it" because I haven't listened to him enough or are there others who think that his music is a trend that will pass?

A classical composer is alive today? Just how old is he?
