I am trying to determine what kind of research has been done on what treatment actually works for "autism spectrum disorders". The State of Washington (and other states nationwide) are receiving a media/net-roots blitz urging the passage of bills requiring insurance carriers provide up to $50,000 annually in treatment for autism and related disorders.

Specifically mentioned in the legislation is something called "ABA" (applied behavior analysis) and I am unfamiliar with what real, credible research has been done on this mode of treatment. My background in autism has mostly been looking at the studies on what does and doesn't trigger (or cause) the condition, not modes of treatment; but I know from personal experience that there is a lot of carp being peddled out there.

Since there are probably informed parties in this sub-forum, I'd appreciate a tip on where to look for peer-reviewed, assessed, scientific studies on the efficacy of various modes of treatment.

Thank you! That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for.

If you can get it, Gezzi, Williams & Carr (1999) Autism: Behavior Analytic Perspectives,
Reno, NV, Contact Press is recommended.
