View Full Version : What I thought, wasn't.

I had a skeptical moment yesterday. I'd decided to hard boil some eggs and had just returned to the kitchen to see if the water had begun to boil, or even get hot, yet. I heard a sound and I totally paused. I know those eggs were in the refrigerator at least a week, they rested in the water like older eggs and although they didn't float, they didn't lie flat on the bottom of the pan of water, there was no logical way what I thought I was hearing was what I was hearing. The mind certainly seems to play tricks on its own. My mind was telling itself that the sound was coming from the eggs in the heating water on the stove. I was telling my mind that was a silly and illogical thing to think. I was losing the argument. The sound sounded like a baby chick peeping noise. I picked the pan away from the heat, found the water lukewarm, reached in and held up and listened to each of the six eggs in order to prove to my mind that the sound wasn't coming from them. The sound continued until I removed one particular egg from the water. I know that egg shells are not exactly airtight, so I put the egg back in the water and looked for bubbles. I didn't see any bubbles, but I embraced the skepticism of the implausible and let the eggs boil until they were both quiet and hard boiled. I am glad to report that they were just eggs, and the potato salad turned out nicely.
