I don't read as much as I used to (something I'm more accutely aware of digesting Marc's book reviews) but I wanted to recommend two good books less about critical thinking and more about the history of two movements in this country - The Religious Right and The Creationists.
Ronald L Numbers gives the definative history of creationism in the United States in his book The Creationists (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0520083938/qid=1068713631//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl14/104-0446530-3480738?v=glance&s=books&n=507846).
Similarly Isaac Kramnik and R. Laurence Moore chronicle the Church and State issues that have vexed this country from it's very founding. Their book is a polemic against the religious right and they admit it up front, but that doesn't damage their case in the least bit. The Godless Constitution (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/039331524X/qid=1068713939//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i0_xgl14/104-0446530-3480738?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) clearly demonstrates that the United States was not founded as a Christian nation.

I'm sorry, but I feel like a porn star is telling me what to read. Your avatar is really freaking me out - it gives me a sick feeling that it actually is Ron Jeremy talking to me. Shudder.

How cool. Your first post comments on my custom title. :) I feel validated.*
Starmann, it was even too creepy for me. The person that provided it for me said it was it was perfectly disturbing. She was right.
*assuming of course that you're referring to my "a post by Alan Smithee" custom title and not my Ron Jeremy avatar. ;)
Ratman, I think I sent Girl6 a copy (not sure, but think so) you may contact her and maybe she'll figure out a way to get it to you. I'd take mine to the library we could organize and interlibrary loan, but mines too dusty marked up with highlighter.

You and me both.
I can't read about creationism too much. It just makes my want to cry/bang my head against something very hard/slap everyone.
That "Godless Constitution" looks like a good one though.
metropolis_part_one: A Dream Theater fan, perhaps?

The Creationists is actually quite heartening. Not only does Numbers show how intellectually and morally bankrupt the movement is, he lists one great story of a guy who was funded by the Creationists to become a credentialed creationist biologist and over the course of his studies, he actually loses his faith.

As history has shown repeatedly it's the agenda that takes priority, screw all subsequent action. It's the ends, who cares about the means?

Ok, I'm intrigued. I'll give it a look.

I really do appreciate the offer, but by the time I get around to it, I'll probably have the resources to get a copy for myself. That way if I spill coffee all over it I won't feel bad. :D
