I'll be very grateful. Or maybe you could tell me how to do it? I copied it to the new version of realplayer, but it remains a video clip.

What I'd do is this:
Download greasemonkey, a firefox addon. You can search for it in firefox, go to tools -> addons and type in greasemonkey.
Download the firefox greasemonkey script called Yousabletubefix, which you can find on userscripts.org.
Download winff, a gui frontend for ffmpeg, available for windows and linux.
After installing all of this, go to the video, select mpeg4 in the dropdown box underneath the video, then click the title and you'll be asked where you want to download the video to.
Then open winff, add the mpeg4 video you just downloaded, select audio and the format you want to convert to (mp3, ac3, wma, wav, whatever), click convert, and wait until it finishes.
There are many, many other ways to do this, but that's the method I use, mainly because I use greasemonkey and the userscript anyway.
Don't hesitate to PM me if you need to know more.
Edit: I converted the file for you and put it online, I PMed you the location.

I used a program called Wiretap Pro, which intercepts audio data going to the sound card, to capture the audio as I watched the clip. I saved it as a 44.1 kHz 16 bit mono AIFF file and then used iTunes to convert it to a 128 kbps mono mp3 file.
The AIFF is 19.5 Mb and the mp3 is 3.5 Mb. Now, how can I send one of them to you? The AIFF is way too big for email; I've sent mp3s of similar size before so that might work.
Otherwise I'll have to go over to my other workplace and set up an account on our ftp server that we could use to let you download it.

Or just good old QuickTime. Not sure what you need, I have Flip4Mac and Perian installed, which is probably all you need. Oh, and the flashgot add-on for Firefox. With the latter, you can download the youtube video to an FLV file. Plays on QuickTime, which can export the soundtrack to AIFF, AU or WAV.

Guys, you're supposed to use this form of a response: I would never, ever, ever violate the copyright laws by ripping the audio from that youtube video for my own use, but if it was a public domain work I would use (insert favored software here).

No I wouldn't. I have standards. Quite why anyone would want something that has been through youtube's flash compression system I'm not sure.

Considering that this is either a mono concert tape or a 78 acetate air check, and obviously from some time before 1959, I doubt the compression hurts it much.
I used the Creative software that came on my computer, set to record "what U hear" in real time. On my laptop, I know that Cakewalk Pyro will do it too, and I think the freeware Audacity can also do it.

Also, freeware SUPER can convert among several formats, including stripping video/audio off a file.

geni, the youtube generation doesn't know what high fidelity is! A $100 iPod dock w/ speakers is the best system it will ever be played on.

I PM'ed UW, but just in case there are any other Bechet lovers out here, this link to a mono MP3 file will exist for a very limited time (that is, until UW tells me he's gotten it):

I haven't heard a reply from UW, and nobody appears to have downloaded the file I put on box. net. It's still up. If you're having trouble with the link, post back and I'll check to make sure I got it right. The file is there.
e.t.a. I just checked. The link works.

Most of the time what people want to save is visual, not auditory.
Huh.

Sad but in most cases true.
