According to this site on the code of Hammurabi (http://www.constitution.org/ime/hammurabi.htm), the 13th law was omitted because it was deemed unlucky.

Anybody know anything more about this? I've never come across it before, to be honest.

Never heard that before, but I did find 2 other sources, by way of Wikipedia, that list the enumerated code skipping from 12 to 14.

University of Evansville (http://eawc.evansville.edu/anthology/hammurabi.htm)
Washington State University (http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/MESO/CODE.HTM)

I couldn't find anything on the Louvre (location of original) website to list the laws.

I was curious enough to pull out my old 10lb Stokstad texbook , dust it off and see if I could read anything about the 13th law on the Stele of Hammurabi.

Nothing in Stokstad mentions superstitions like ommitting the number 13, but if it says so in Wikipedia then it must be true.

Found it:

13: Lay off the goats, sicko.

No wonder they've conveniently misplaced it.

Interesting, thanks. I still think it's drawing a long bow to think this equates the number with being necessarily unlucky, although it does present a curious situation.

From reading Law number 2, it sounds like it would be a good idea to learn how to swim.
