My computer has a single DVDR/CDRW drive, which works fine, for the most part.

However today I went into My Computer to check the disk space, maybe clean up my C Drive if I need to, and to my surprise I find that not only do I have my DVDR/CDRW drive (D: Drive) I have a plain DVDR as well (E: drive).

Now, I'm damn sure this isn't normal and I want to get rid of it. I tried disabling the "device" it says it's using (I checked it was different from my real DVDR) and that, to my horror, disabled the real one!

Does ANYONE know what the hell happened and how I can get rid of this new nuisance?

NOt sure about my computers specs but I could look if needed, I run Windows XP professional.

PLEASE ignore the horrendous typo in the thread title. I've been awake for a very, very long time.

I've been awake for a very, very long time. That's no excuse for anthropomorphising your computer, which will now be quite pissed off with you

On a slightly more serious note...

My computer has a single DVDR/CDRW drive, which works fine, for the most part.OK... other than for "the most part", what does it do?

Quick fix:

Reboot your computer without any CD loaded, and delete/remove the devices in the the device manager. Reboot and reinstall drivers.

Of course, others might have ideas that try to actually address your problem at its root ...

You may have software or a device that is emulating a DVD drive. Some USB thumbdrives, especially the ones with the "U3" barfware built into them, will do that.

Sometimes some CDs and DVDs will have software that will do that, when they autoplay, as well.

As will some disc creation utilities; Nero or Roxio will do that as well.

You don't have daemon tools or anything like that do you?

Nope. The problem seems to have gone after I rebooted and reinstalled, so you can all safely ignore this thread.

Was it dangerous to ignore this thread before the problem was resolved?
