Earlier this month it was announced (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=134574) that Crystal Cathedral/Robert Schuller's ministry was in trouble. Now today there is really sad news that a man took his life inside the Crystal Cathedral:

GARDEN GROVE, Calif.

A man shot and killed himself in front of a cross inside televangelist Robert H. Schuller's Crystal Cathedral on Wednesday, police and church officials said. The man handed a note and his driver's license to two ushers, walked to the cross and then shot himself in the head as he appeared to be praying, Senior Pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz said.

The man's identity was not released, but police Lt. Dennis Ellsworth said the man was in his 40s. Church spokesman Mike Nason said there was no record of the man at the cathedral.

Betty Spicer, a volunteer usher at the famous sanctuary, said she greeted the man when he entered. She said he handed her a folded note with two cards inside as the man told her: "You may want this."

Spicer said he then walked to the foot of the cross. She and another volunteer said they thought the man was praying when she heard a pop.

A tourist, one in a group of seven or eight visitors from Canada, told her the man had shot himself.

There have been two other shootings at the church in recent years.

In December 2004, Crystal Cathedral Orchestra conductor Johnnie Carl, 57, killed himself at the complex after a standoff that began when he opened fire in offices before a Christmas pageant. He had been hospitalized for severe depression.

Also that year, a man was wounded by a plainclothes police officer in the cathedral parking lot. Authorities said the man was meeting his mother, but the officer didn't know they were related and intervened in what he thought was an argument.

Man who shot himself at Crystal Cathedral altar was homeless
Steve Smick had history of mental illness, friends say.

GARDEN GROVE – Homeless and mentally ill, Steve Smick drove his pickup to the Crystal Cathedral on Wednesday morning, knelt before a golden cross and then put a stolen handgun to his head.
...
Smick had lived for a time at an address in Whittier, but he had moved out several months ago, according to police. He was living out of his truck, and friends told investigators that he had a history of mental illness and drug use, police said.
...
A man named Steve Smick was licensed as a steel contractor until 2003, state records show. He listed a work address in east Los Angeles that corresponded to a piping firm and a company named Smick Inc. A worker in the area said those companies had gone out of business.
...
Smick arrived at the Crystal Cathedral on Wednesday morning with a semi-automatic handgun in his backpack. Police believe he had taken the gun from a close friend about two weeks ago. The friend had noticed the gun was missing but did not report it and did not suspect Smick, police said.

A church greeter welcomed Smick as he entered the vast sanctuary and asked him where he was from. "Around here," he told her. Then he handed her a piece of paper folded over his driver's license and a friend's business card. "You may want this," he said.

He walked down the left-hand aisle of the sanctuary, past ropes that were meant to keep visitors back from the altar, and stopped at a golden cross. "He knelt down on one knee," said Andy Brandsma, a tourist from Canada who was visiting the cathedral with family. "You could see he was praying."

After a few moments, Smick moved to a front pew and started digging through his backpack. Andy Brandsma's brother, Lou, saw him pull out a large handgun.

"He didn't hesitate," Lou Brandsma said. "The gun came to his head and boom, it was that quick."

Officials at the Crystal Cathedral said they had no record of Smick attending services there or seeking help through its pastoral-care services.

We all know Satan is working overtime since his time is running out. We had 4 suicides in our county last Sunday. It's horrible to think people can be pushed this far. Absolutely tragic!
Next time Satan knocks on the door of my mind I'm going to ask the Lord to answer it!

Is this something that happens to you often?Yes Sometimes I battle dark thoughts but I notice they don't get in that much when I am reading or studying Gods Word.
This is the key to winning the spiritual war.. Ephesians 6:10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints

Hurray! Kurious Kathy is back. If we ask nicely will you tell us an end times story? I love the one about how Obama is going to die and come back to life. Tell us that one again, please.

It's a shame that people apparently feel they can't get the mental health help they need. There's no bright side on a suicide, but at least they only shot themselves and didn't hit a Sunday service with guns blazing.
