I'm up to 6.6, but I'm having a lot more downtime than before.
Typically, a week after taking a 1-year contract, I got a cheaper offer of 10Mb/s via cable.

What I don't understand is that BT promised me "6Mb/sec", but when I look at the actual download speeds they're given in Kb/sec and seem to go up to about 120 or 130.

They don't mention it can't send stuff to you any faster than the site you are connected to can send it.

Most likely they promised 6Mbit, not 6MB. There's a difference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mbit). Divide by 8 to find the download speed in Kb/sec. In your case, that would be 750 KB/sec. To test your speed: http://www.speedtest.net/

Interestingly, or maybe not, 125kb/sec is exactly the download speed I get when my 1 meg connection is maxed out downloading from a fast site. It sounds slow for a 6 meg link.

My 1 meg connection is pretty good for day to day stuff but for serious downloading I rely on my university connection - 1 gig and it's sweet. The other afternoon I set a major upgrade of one of my Linux boxes running and by the time I'd come back from restroom and coffee machine it had pulled down 280 megs of stuff and was busy installing. I'd love that kind of access at home.

Another thing to do is check the small print you'll probably find it advertised as
"Up to 6Meg Download"

The speed they advertise is only the potential maximum, the further away from the exchange you live the lower the maximum speed.
