View Full Version : Vertical text a possibility?

I'm trying to design a book cover. It has to be a single .pdf page; back cover, spine and front cover all in one. I'm trying to word process it as a single page with three columns, with the intention of converting to .pdf once it's done. I'm doing fine on the front and back covers, but the spine is defeating me. I need to make the text on that run vertically with respect to the rest of the text on the "page".
I can't find any feature in my word processor to do that, and I think I've searched the features pretty comprehensively. Can anyone suggest either a way to get this to happen within word processing software, or an alternative piece of software that would handle the job?

I think if you use a text box, you can change theorientation of text within it. Is this what you are looking for?

YES!!! That will do it!
I can only plead brain-deadeness last night when I was fiddling with it.
I'm at an SF con (http://www.conventions.org.uk/redemption/) and I was a bit sleep-deprived yesterday.
Much better today, I'm in a panel game of "Who Wants to be Master of the Universe" (based on "Who Wants to be a Millionnaire") with my computer on my lap, and getting threatened with banishment from the "Ask the Audience" panel on the grounds that it's not supposed to be "Ask Google"....
I'll try the text box ASAP, but it's sure to work.
Thanks.

Take note on which way is up with the spine text. Normally when you lay a book on it's back (so front cover is facing up) you can read the spine text just fine.
German books, for some odd reason, have this inversed, so when a book is laying with it's front cover facing up, the spine text is upside down

Which means that you have to lean to the right to browse books on the shelf in a US bookstore, while you have to lean to the left to do the same in a German bookstore.
And you cannot browse at all at leisure when you are in a bookstore that mixes and matches German and non-German books on the same shelf .
Drove me crazy multiples times.

I like the spine text to be right-way-up whhen the book is lying face-up. So I've done it that way. The other way drives me nuts.
Thanks guys.
I've got another thing I need help with, but it's graphics so I'll start a new thread to make sure everyone sees it.
