I'm trying to create a very simple logo. However, I don't have a graphics package that will let me play with text - Paint doesn't seem to be up to it.

I just want the letters ADDM, like that but then with a mirror-image below it, that is, as if reflected in the baseline. The mirror-image should just be as I've typed it there, but the right-way-up letters should be silhouette - so that the right-way-up letters appear white while the upside-down mirror-image is black.

Constantia font for preference.

I used to have PaintShopPro, and I'm sure it would have done that, but I lost that two changes of computer ago. Is there anything cheap (or preferably free) to download that would let me do this stuff?

Halp!

http://www.gimp.org/

should do it fine.

or in theory
http://www.inkscape.org/

But only if you are prepared to play with vector drawing.

ETA Constantia could be a problem since it isn't free. If you really want that font powerpoint might be your best option

Funny, I've got Constantia on all my applications on my PC, don't know where it came from. I've done a pdf of a whole book in it. But it's not that important, Times New Roman will do it.

I'll try your suggestions, thanks,

Not entirely clear what you want. Ignoreing font sytle something like this (hmm forum doesn't allow SVG uploads)?

Mmmmm, maybe. I'm running XP mind you. But when I downloaded Gimp, there it was. I'm not that close to getting it, yet, I need to play a bit.

The reflection's right on what you did, but my idea for the top bit was just outline, without the black background.

Then my friend says that since the second D stands for Distorted then the reflecton should be wavy but I think that might be a complication too far.

Distortion is fairly easy. If you look in the filters menu bar there is a whole section of distorts. eg

Geni, you rock!

PS. Dang, Geni, can you get rid of the rectangular border? I thought I could do it easily, but the crop tool isn't playing ball.

There isn't one. It is a product of the forum software. If you click the thumbnail to view the full size version and then click on that it should go away.

Funny, it was still there when I opened the file in my photo-editor. I did get rid of it with the crop tool in the end, but there's a persistent black dot remaining in the bottom left corner. I'm sure I can paste something white over it.... ETA, eraser tool, works a treat.

I've put that into the draft book cover design and it looks pretty spiffy.

I wonder how it would look in dark grey....

Though your problems were already solved i just felt i had to resolve em for you in paint. The functionality is there. Ctrl + R.

Geni, did you do that in Gimp? Because I'd like to play and if I know it's possible I should be able to do it myslef and modify it.

The top letters are a little faint when resized to the smaller size I want, and I'd like to try a grey colour.

But it's looking great!

Gimp and inkscape.

Text is in inkscape. The distorts are done in gimp. PM me an email adress and I can send the various bits over. Here's one with thicker lines and I've left the anti-aliasing off the ripple effect.

Geni, since the migration to the new servers, these thumbnails aren't showing up at all unfortunately.

Try ctrl-F5. Anyway I've email you the images.

Thanks for the emails Geni. I expect I'll be able to do something with them.

The original was pretty close. The second one might have been perfect but for the grey background. (It's supposed to go on a white background, with no apparent frame. I was thinking of making the actual logo grey rather than black, that was all.)

Anyway - progress, we has it.

Thanks.

Rolfe, if it's of any use in the future (which it might not be of course) you can find PSP4.1 here (http://www.roughnet1.freeserve.co.uk/utils/) (psp41)

I've not used the later versions much, and don't actually know if you can do this in 4.1 anyway. i think you can

I do like gimp a lot, but the baby duck syndrome is the mutha of all computer habits.....I still use Psp 4.1 on XP too for the stuff I know I can do in it, which isn't that much compared to some experts.. I'm still learning gimp, and liking it too....

Just a suggestion......thats all, seems like its sussed anyhow..

Rolfe

Mmm, not wholly sussed. Geni's better at this than me. I'm still trying to get the grey background off that second version, and make the letters themselves dark grey.

The best option if you want just the text in order to lay it out on a customized background is to get a PNG file so that the image can be saved with a transparent background. GIF files can do more or less the same, but I'd only suggest that if the effect you're using doesn't have transparency itself. I played around with it for kicks in photoshop:

Playing around with the filter effects and feathering with the marquee tools can also give you interesting effects if you know for certain what you want

Rolfe

Oh, I know what I want and Geni has provided it. It's just that I want it 17.5mm wide, and when you get that small the line thickness starts to be a bit of an issue.

I realise this isn't as easy as I thought it was, it's just that people who know what they're doing make it seem easy.
