View Full Version : Changing Music Tags

I've named all my music files over the years exactly the way I like them and until now any MP3 player I've purchased used the file name in sorts and displays but my new player sorts by the tags Title, Genre, and Artist. Since I've never used or cared about these they are all over and some don't resemble my filename at all. Is there a way to batch all my filenames into the Title tag? I'm using XP. I only have about 3000 songs but that's still to much to fix all the tags manually. I've never used scripts and so far the only advice I've gotten was "use a script" so that alone wasn't much help. Any help would be appreciated.

This looks like it will do what you are looking for.

The functionality you need is "Import tags from filenames".
Note, most people have the reverse problem: tagged files with inconvenient file names, which accounts for why the first response is to write a script to get tags from file names. So long as you have been consistent in naming your files, this should get the job done.
I strongly suggest you test your pattern on copies of several files before you apply it to the entire library.
Also be aware that in the course of adding tags, each file will become a small amount larger and a temporary file will be created, so be sure you have enough free space on the storage medium to allow for this.

Thanks, I've gotten some suggestions via PM as well and will try these as soon as I get home.
