I was wondering if anyone saw this episode of Southpark where the kids demonstrate cold readings and make fun of John Edwards throughout the whole show. I got it off Kazaa today and thought it was funny enough to post it on here.
Description:
Episode 615 - The Biggest Douche in the Universe
When a famous psychic fails* to help him exorcise Kenny from his body, Cartman takes other steps to achieve his goal. He and Chef travel to the moors of Scotland, where Chef’s mom tries a little of her voodoo magic on him. Meanwhile, after the boy’s encounter with the TV psychic, Kyle is paralyzed with fear at the thought of members of the spirit world watching over him. Only by debunking those who claim they can communicate with the dead can Stan save Kyle.
*John Edwards

Here's a good quote from the show:
You see, I learned something today. At first I thought you were all stupid, listening to this douche's advice, but now I understand that you're all here because you're scared. You're scared of death and he offers you some kind of understanding. You all want to believe in it so much, I know you do. You find comfort in the thought that your loved ones are floating around trying to talk to you, but thnk about it: Is that really what you want? To just be floating around after you die, having to talk to this a**hole? [the audience is listening] We need to recognize this stuff for what it is: magic tricks.
From the script is here:

Mr. Randi addressed that in his newsletter, plus they showed it at TAM1.
That show was a riot! I like SP alot, as brutal as they are.

I often wonder if the creators of South Park are skeptics, or if they have some weird beliefs in paranormal stuff. They sure do poke fun at alot of paranormal BS though.
JE is a douche.. yep.

Matt and Trey have to be critical thinkers. I think most of SP is briliant, but trashy.

I dunno, they get a lot of stuff wrong (World hunger, the Catholic church, the Mormons.)
I think they just like to poke fun at people, and don't care about the reason or have a point to it.

I am laughing thinking about those episodes. It was great to find out the right religion was the Mormons. "Lets play Charades!"
It has had some funny moments, especially their take on David Blaine running a cult and alien probes.

What did they get wrong about those things?

Well, in the ep Starvin' Marvin, they gloss over the political turmoil in places like Ethiopia and make the blanket statement that they starve because they can't grow things there. Too simplified.
The riff on the Catholic church, that they miss the point and that religion should just be 'being good' to people misses that fact that specific religions are all about the details. That's why there are so many branches of christianity. Again, they try to simplify a situation and miss the point.
I haven't seen the recent ep about the Mormon family, so I'll refrain from commenting until I get to see it.
They even got a bit about John Edward wrong. They said 'He doesn't do private readings' but the man does them all the time!
Matt and Trea don't have much info about what they're doing. They're just making poo poo jokes and making fun of people. Which is fine. I enjoy the show, but for what it is.

Perhaps a lot of people miss the irony of the Mormon show last night...at the end the Mormon kid tells Stan that sure he can rag on his religion, family, etc. but he missed out on the chance to make a new friend in the process.Sometimes being so sardonic has its unseen costs.

It's a cartoon.

I do too, but I don't see that they're "getting things wrong". They are simply making fun of things and playing off of stereotypes..they are oversimplifying but I think simplification really brings out what the core of the problems that they make fun of are.

It is there to make you laugh. And obvious stuff like John Edwards, or the Ms. Information episodes just point out the the viewers are smart in this arena.

It's as real as any "reality" show.
