Today is the 66th anniversery of the excecution of Sophie Scholl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_Scholl), one of the persons upon whose example I am trying to raise my daughter.

She's every bit as important as Anne Frank. Keep her alive, share her story.

You are trying to raise your daughter to emulate criminals?

She was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich with her brother Hans. As a result, they were both executed by guillotine

I'm raising her to be a supervillain, actually.

I know, that's what reminded me of the date. Excellent comic, I'm going to print and frame it.

What kind of stupid comment is that?

Then again, I guess you should complain to Walhalla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walhalla_temple) because in 2003 they put a bust of her in there. I think you can complain here (http://www.walhalla-regensburg.de/english/index.shtml).

I'll echo that sentiment, that it should be copied and framed.

Self-betrayal like that is costly, and sometimes, it's costly in ways you never, ever expect.

I used to attend a grammar school named "Sophie-Scholl-Gymnasium". Won't forget her, don't worry :).

Now to think of those nimrods from CIT who'd surely love to compare themselves to Sophie Scholl if only they'd ever heard of her or touched a history book :D ...

One example, they've either run out of steam or have been banned, I guess.
I didn't mean to pollute this thread with 9/11-related bs, I was just, say, impressed by the diferrence between resistance and "resistance" if you get my drift ;)

What I meant was that - if you'd ask them - those guys would probably consider themselves as (for lack of a better idea, English is not my first language) as kindred spirits (or something) to Sophie Scholl :covereyes

Your English is fine, Tobias.

Sophie Scholl's actions were rooted in ethics, morality, order, fact, and truth. The 9/11 Truth Movement has their actions rooted in deception, corruption, anarchy, lies, and falsehood. They're no more kindred spirits with Sophie Scholl, who put her life on the line and was executed for her actions than they are with the men and women who put their lives on the line to save others on 9/11. Quite the opposite: They share much in common with brutish cowards like the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party, and are able to do so because, in truth, they risk nothing at all, save the minuscule credibility they have with a handful of extremist "reporters," whose grasp of facts are even more tenuous than their own.

Thank you, but my name is not Tobias and "Fünke" isn't German anyway :D
It's "Doctor Tobias Fünke" from "Arrested Development"

Also, I'm not a doctor, though I work in healthcare.

As to Sophie Scholl vs. The Thruth Movement: that's what I meant.

ETA: Just found out there [I]are[I] people named "Fünke" in Germany, I had just never heard the name before.

Her last words.

How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause. Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?

I kind of want to send a not to the Pope reminding him of Ms. Scholl's response to Nazism.

FYI, we have a tendency to abbreviate screennames when referencing people here. I'm not really named quixote, nor am I really a coyote, but it's still normal for me to get "quix" "quixote" or "coyote."

We watched Die Weisse Rose in my high school German class. It made quite an impression. I had not heard of the other movie mentioned above; I'll see if Netflix has it.

The counterpoint of Traudl Junge is very interesting. Im toten Winkel (Blind Spot) was a fascinating interview with her. Something my partner and I disagree on is her worry during the interview that she hesitated to talk about Hitler as a person, his everyday habits and personality. She didn't want to humanize him too much, as though it would draw sympathy to him. Patrick agreed, reminding me that he was a monster. I certainly don't want to portray him as a warm fuzzy misunderstood guy, but I think we all need to remember that human beings, just like all of us here, have within them the capacity to commit inhuman acts. It's too easy to dismiss him and people like him as simple monsters.

The counterpoint of Traudl Junge is very interesting.

I was struck by that too (Traudl Junge was Hitler's private secretary, and was in his bunker during the final days of the Third Reich. She died a few years ago.) One of the really interesting things she said was that she used to excuse herself somewhat because she was too young to know any better- until she found out about Sophie Scholl. Scholl was born in the same year as Junge, and also in Munich. She was executed the same year that Junge started working for Hitler.

There was a recent poll in Germany that ranked the greatest Germans in history, and Scholl was at the top of the list, beating Beethoven and Goethe.
