Received a catalog for Cleveland State University's Continuing Education program. These are non-accredited educational courses and seminars, under the main categories of Business and Management, Computers and Information Technology, Construction and Engineering Trades, Landscape and Horticulture, and Nursing and Health/Human Services. The fine print says that CSU "subscribes to the OCHEA Quality Standards for Noncredit Educational Programs" (http://www.ochea.org/)
One would get the impression that these are not the run-of-the-mill "education" courses offered at the local community center, which can often include fluff courses.
In the "Nursing and Health/Human Services" category, there are sub-categories: Medical-Surgical and Critical Care Nursing, Mental Health and Well Being, Health Care Management/Education, Professional/Personal Development, and Whole Health.
The more astute among you have already guessed in general terms what comes next.
Under the "Whole Health" category:
Emotional Intelligence
Exploring the Use of Energy
Gentle Touch for the Elderly
Massage Overview
Meditation as a Healing Science
Music and Wellness
Parenting and Emotional Intelligence
Sacred Art of Dying - Unit II: Focus on Healing
Spirituality - Whose Business Is It?
Women's Health Matters for Middle Age and Beyond
I'll address a couple of those later. First, though, under the category "Health Care Management/Education" there is the seminar "Conflict Resolution" This seminar focuses on the use of the "enneagram" as a tool for conflict resolution. There are to other seminars, "Understanding Yourself and Others" which teaches the use of the enneagram; these dovetail into "Using Emotional Intelligence".
"Exploring the Use of Energy" is, as you guessed, a seminar in Therapeutic Touch. Covered are "Principle of energy, The four basic energy fields, Energy and intentionality, and TT, Reiki, and other applications". One instructor is an "RN, MSN, psychiatric/mental health clinical nurse specialist, TT practitioner, psychotherapist, certified in newborn massage, and an educational consultant in private practice," who works for the Cleveland Municipal School District. The other is an "MSN, RN, LMT, certified clinical nurse specialist, adult psychiatric/mental health, and licensed massage therapist and TT practitioner and psychotherapist in private practice," also certified in newborn massage. Both have "studied with Dr. Krieger and D. Kunz."
From the course blurb:
Energy is everywhere and everything. It is so ever present, that we become indifferent to the magic of its many guises. Discover how you already use energy in your daily practice and learn different ways you can add to expand your practice.
This course is for medical professionals. Below the seminar description, this sentence: "Contact Hours: Awarded to RNs and LPNs (6.6)" This applies toward contact hours required for license renewals.
Courses and seminars from the Fall 2003 series are listed here:

I'm not so appalled that such unproven fluff is seriously presented by CSU, but I am appalled that it applies toward contact hours.
