View Full Version : Religion you would choose

What is the religion you would choose if pressed to?
For me, it would have to be some type of Buddhism, Taoism, or Jainism, I think because of their views of what "God" is like. That is, they don't tend to personalize it.

Ayn Rand, James Randi...
It would probably be 'Randism' :)
Otherwise Buddhism is funny and always trendy

If someone put a gun to my head and said choose a religion I would tell them to choose one for me. To stay alive I would probably repeat any of their garbage but as soon as the gun were taken away my atheism would reach the surface.
Is religion coerced still religion?

Since most religion is coerced in some form or fashion, then I would have to say yes to your question.

Shinto.
People who are Shinto also consider themselves of other religions at the same time. The gods of Shinto are many, but you don't have to give respect to any one in particular. You just go and pray whenever you feel like it.
Really, it's more of a respect for the natural world and others than a religion.

I better mention Carlinism before someone else does...
Carlinism in a nutshell:
I worship the sun and pray to Joe Pesci.

This is a trick to get atheists to select a religion. So you'd have to have an actual gun for this one.
Either that or Bokononism from Cat's Cradle.

I would create my own religion. I would be the boss and get a lot of money from my followers. 10% from their monthly income plus extra donations. In exchange, they would get spiritual comfort, the promisse of heaven if they behave OK, hell for the infidels and their enemies, understand that the devil or something else is the cause of their problems and that the world is quite simple (black or white, right or wron, good or bad).
I know, I know, its not original, but it still works.

Pressed? As in "gun to my head"?
I'll tell them whatever they wanted to hear.
Of course, at the same time, it would reinforce my belief that religions are out-modded ideas from a by-gone age, where people could be swallowed by fish and live or that people could be turned into a solid block of salt.
And I'd want to make sure after said person was arrested that he or she was removed from regular society.

Of course not.
Pressed as in someone asking you to make a choice of a specific religion you would choose.

T'ai Chi,
You ask many questions. You open many threads.
I would like to ask you one question, too:
Just how many threads do you think you must open, in order for those questions you have yet to answer, disappear?

Last time I thought for 2 seconds, you were the one with the lists of questions, and you had a higher post count than me.

If you make some sense, perhaps I could address your question.
(notice Claus was the one derailing this thread, folks)

T'ai---Some of us are born to ponder. So...pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! :D
So ponder THIS: What religion would someone choose if they were the only person on an island, with no 'church' of fellow believers, or people to whom to express their religion with? Would this make a difference as to which religion one would choose?

Hi Iamme, that is a very interesting question. I would think it would matter that that person was in isolation from other people, and that this would affect the type of religion that that person goes in to, if any.
I'd certainly think that their religion would incorporate themes in their environment, such as sand, sea water, animals, trees, rocks, wind, rain, food sources, and luck. The religions of people that are isolated have showed this to be true. However, we are dealing with one and only one person here, so one cannot be sure.
It is also possible that having not heard of religion, that the person wouldn't even think of one to begin with. However, this person would in fact see death (of animals and plants) and destruction, as well as his own aging, so he might start to think about 'what happens after I go away'?, 'Where did those animals...and I, come from'?, 'why is food sometimes plentiful and sometimes not'?, and other related issues.

I a very strong Athiest, but I guess if I had to choose a religion it would would be buddism, because that is more a philosophy than a religion, but people still call it a religion.

I would adopt some variety of fundamentalism -- Christian, Islam, whatever. I might as well enjoy the certainty of a fundamentalist religion if I have to give up rationality and behaving like an adult.

I'm somewhat attracted to the Vedanta school of thought.

I think I'd go with Hermes/Mercury. He's clever, perceptive, plucky, enterprising, dexterous, well-travelled, and quick. He often gets the better of other gods and always has fun doing it. Those are all characteristics I admire in a god. Plus, he has his own planet (which is more than most gods can boast) and his own element, so there.
Either him or Bacchus. I hear his temple rituals were the original "Girls Gone Wild."

TimeCube...of course. It's so completely insane and outside the boundaries of reason, logic and coherent thought that if you believe it no one can disprove it to you. Plus, it removes the need for using prepositions while speaking or writing.
In seriousness, none. Same as now.

Tai Chi...Willingly choose is something I can understand but 'pressed to choose' I don't. Unless you can provide an example or definition then the question has no meaning.
If a choice is forced then there is no choice. 'Give me you're money or I will kill you!', is not a choice. Choose a religion or else is not a choice, no choice is made under duress.
If you are asking me which established religion I admire most then the answer is none. If you are asking me which religion I like then the answer is none.

I'll give a second vote for Tacoism. I see nothing that shows it as less rational than any other choice. In fact, it's more rational than $cientology.

However you want to interpret the phrase "pressed to choose", be my guest.

I'm more asking which one, if you asbolutely had to select one, would you select?
The game is one has to select a religion. If you don't want to play, that's fine, but we get to keep the ball. :)

Because I cannot for the life of me envision what circumstances would 'press' me to choose a religion then my only answer could be....none.

One has to have enough imagination to consider it a thought experiment or a hypothetical scenario.
