In his 14 November 2002 commentary (http://randi.org/jr/111403.html), James Randi mentions that serial killer Gary Leon Ridway, an early suspect in the Green River killings, "passed" a polygraph "test." This is not the only misdirection caused by reliance on the polygraph in that case. Melvin Foster, another early suspect in the case, took a polygraph test in September 1982 and failed, resulting in much unpleasantness for him. Ridgway's confession (and DNA evidence) exonerates him:

I just thought that I would mention that the Winter Issue of American Heritage of Invention and Technology (http://www.inventionandtechnology.com/) I just received contained a good article about the polygraph.
