Well, actually the Dems don't accuse people of treason, but merely of hating, wanting to poison children, or starve seniors and leave them to die in the streets. The extremes of either party do not appeal to me, and sadly, they are the ones you hear the most from.

But then, Judaism isn't just a religion - it's a lot of other stuff as well. Really, anyone who claims to be a Jew should be allowed to be one, at least by non-Jews.

Just how Jews should decide who is a real and not a real Jew is clearly a fraught subject. It would be possible to end up with a Phelpsian only-me-and-my-immediate-family-qualify situation.

That's easy. Try eating Gefilte Fish without the purple horseradish. I am a Jew born in New Jersey, and not even I have been able to master that trick yet.

Judaism doesn't really work like that. I've asked two Rabbis (one Reform, the other Conservative) if you could be Jewish without believing in God. Both told me that you absolutely can and that belief in God is not required.
